First Look at Jeff Nichols' 'Loving' Starring Ruth Negga and Joel Edgerton

With a diverse resume that includes Shotgun Stories, Take Shelter, Mud, and the upcoming sci-fi film Midnight Special, predicting what director Jeff Nichols will do next is never easy. That's also what makes him such an interesting filmmaker, and why he made for an exciting choice to direct the interracial marriage drama, Loving.

The first image from the film has been released, featuring Joel Edgerton and Ruth Negga as Richard and Mildred Loving, an interracial couple whose marriage in 1958 got them arrested, thrown in jail, and exiled from the state of Virginia. Why? Because interracial marriage was illegal back then, and the couple spent the next decade fighting to return home with their marriage intact. It's a powerful story previously told in the excellent documentary The Loving Story, and Nichols should be able to do some great things bringing it to a wider audience.

Of course there's a role for Michael Shannon as he's in all of Nichols' films, plus Nick Kroll, Bill Camp, and Marton Csokas in supporting turns. As of now there's no release date but maybe we'll be getting some news on that front soon.
