Jennifer Lawrence Takes Control of Her Life in New Trailer for 'Joy'
With one Oscar win for Silver Linings Playbook and a nomination for American Hustle, is there any question why Jennifer Lawrence gravitates to director David O. Russell? Their next collaboration, the biopic Joy, already has some predicting more gold in her future. The first trailer for the film played up the darker aspects of Joy Mangano's remarkable rags-to-riches story, and elements of that are also seen in the newly-released footage, but Russell also wants audiences to see something magical. He tells EW...
“I want it to be unexpected. I want people to see that it’s exciting and that it’s emotional and it’s intense and it’s funny and it’s new. It’s something we’ve never done before....It’s about emotion and about people and humanity and what is ridiculous and ordinary about them but where that becomes extraordinary and magical. That’s that place where we live,”
The film explores decades in the life of Mangano, a struggling single mother who turned things around by inventing the Miracle Mop. We see her getting married, enduring terrible betrayals, and hitting rock bottom, but she perseveres and builds an empire that she fearlessly defends from enemies inside and outside the family. And "family" is the appropriate word because Mangano comes across like Don Corleone by the time this trailer is done.
Also starring Bradley Cooper, Robert De Niro, Edgar Ramirez, Isabella Rossellini, Virginia Madsen, and Diane Ladd, Joy opens in theaters on Christmas Day.
