J.J. Abrams Talks 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' Lightsaber Battles, Plus New TV Spots

It wouldn't be a Star Wars movie without a few epic lightsaber duels, and the promos for Star Wars: The Force Awakens have teased at least one between Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) and Finn (John Boyega). But what's going to set these battles apart from what we saw recently in George Lucas' hyper-speed, digitally-enhanced prequels? J.J. Abrams says he went back to what worked in the original trilogy to draw inspiration. He tells Empire (via Star Wars News Net)...

"When you look at Star Wars and Empire, they are very different lightsaber battles, but for me they felt more powerful because they were not quite as slick [as the prequels]. I was hoping to go for something much more primitive, aggressive and rougher, a throwback to the kind of heart-stopping lightsaber fights I remembered being so enthralled by as a kid."

And a part of that is using practical effects to make these fights seem more dangerous than ever. Anything to prevent us from having to see Yoda flipping around the screen like a pinball again. That was brutal.

Anyway, here are a couple more TV spots and promos specifically centered on Finn and Rey (Daisy Ridley), plus a trio of retro posters via IGN.  Star Wars: The Force Awakens opens December 18th.
