The longtime friendship between Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire stretches beyond acting and their mutual fight against animal cruelty. They've both become powerful producers in Hollywood, developing projects that appeal to their interests. They were to team up on a pair of movies dealing with animal conservation, but they don't seem to have gone anywhere, perhaps because it's a topic studios aren't really quick to invest in. But a spy movie, that's a different a story, and now the duo are joining forces to bring a unique one to the screen.
According to The Tracking Board, Dicaprio and Maguire will produce The Havana Affair, a spy thriller centered on The Cuban Project aka Operation Mongoose, a mission started by President Kennedy to overthrow Castro's Communist regime. Kennedy authorized the secret operation in 1961 with the plan to start a revolt that would take place in Cuba the following year. The scheme was ultimately a failure and suspended in 1962 as the Cuban Missile Crisis began to escalate.
The film is written by first-time screenwriter Wayne Lemon and is being described as James Bond meets Argo, which is definitely an intriguing combination. So far there doesn't appear to be any chance of DiCaprio and Maguire sharing the screen together for the first time since The Great Gatsby but things could change.
DiCaprio is currently receiving rave reviews for his performance in The Revenant, while Maguire was last seen in the chess drama Pawn Sacrifice.
