Star Wars has always been credited for its strength of female characters, and that looks to be continuing with Daisy Ridley coming aboard as Rey and Gwendoline Christie's Captain Phasma. As of now that hasn't transferred over to behind the camera where there has not been a strong woman presence at all. Lucasfilm producer Kathleen Kennedy complained earlier this year that no women had approached her about working on the vaunted franchise, but it's possible something is afoot to change that.
According to the LA Times, WME agent Adriana Alberghetti managed to secure meetings with Lucasfilm execs for seven female filmmakers, four directors and three writers total. The meetings took place in October during a conference to discuss the gender disparity in Hollywood, but as of now there's no word on who was involved. Alberghetti does represent a couple of high-profile women such as director Sarah Gavron (Suffragette) and writers Linda Woolverton (Maleficent) and Marti Noxon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer).
However, it could be a while before any kind of hire takes place since most of the announced Star Was and spinoff projects have already been filled. The only one that's left open is the Boba Fett spinoff which Josh Trank was previously attached to. That film is on the backburner for now, but could it be an option for Star Wars' first woman director? Or would they take the opportunity to put a different film in its place? Perhaps one with a female lead character? Only time will tell.
