Now that most of the major critics groups have handed out their awards for the year's best (including us here in DC), it's time for the guilds to get in on the action. The Screen Actor's Guild is generally considered one of the earliest indicators of the Academy Award nominees since actors make up the largest voting block, and if that's the case this year then we can expect quite a few surprises.
The 2016 SAG nominations honored Trumbo with three nominations; Beasts of No Nation earned two, as did Helen Mirren while completely leaving out The Hateful Eight, Joy, and Matt Damon. Bryan Cranson earned a Best Actor nod for his work on the Hollywood Black List film, while Mirren was nominated for Best Supporting Actress, her second since she was surprisingly recognized for Woman in Gold. Damon and The Martian were totally shut out, while Mad Max: Fury Road only got in for Best Stunt Ensemble, where it's joined by Everest in another unexpected move. There were plenty of surprises elsewhere, including Sarah Silverman for I Smile Back, and Jacob Tremblay's performance in Room putting him in some special company in the Best Supporting Actor field. Spotlight continued its strong run with a Best Ensemble nod plus Rachel McAdams for Best Supporting Actress, and The Big Short did well with two.
