It's already been a banner year for 20th Century Fox's X-Men franchise thanks to Deadpool, which in case you missed it just became the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all-time with $745M worldwide. It's also set to be the biggest hit of the entire franchise, which obviously includes all of those Bryan Singer-directed movies and the Wolverine flicks starring Hugh Jackman. Fox will hope to at least match, and possible surpass those numbers later this year with the massive X-Men: Apocalypse, which may or may not include an appearance by everyone's favorite clawed Canadian mutant.
Although rumors of Wolverine appearing in the film have been going around since Comic-Con, Singer doesn't confirm anything when asked by Empire (via CBM). All he had to say was, "As a central character, he didn’t fit into this particular story", which could mean just about anything. Does it mean he's not central because he's not there? Or that he's just a very minor cog in the mutant machine? Considering how things ended in X-Men: Days of Future Past, with Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence) fishing Wolvie out of the water disguised as William Stryker, chances are he'll turn up in some way. Stryker will once again be played by Josh Helman, with the mutant-hating villain on the hunt for Magneto.
While the speculation has been that this could be Singer's final X-Men movie, that's not necessarily the case. In fact, he's already looking forward to the team's next opponent, and it's a doozy.
"Abondoning the franchise is not something I think about. But I could not roll into another X-Men movie tomorrow. And I hope not to. I hope to take a break....I'd love to use Proteus somehow. There's a lot visually you could do with a character like that."
Not only would Proteus be a blast to see depicted from a special effects standpoint, but he's also the mutant son of X-Men colleague, Moria MacTaggert, played by the returning Rose Byrne. Kevin MacTaggert is one of the most dangerous and powerful mutants the team has ever faced, and is gifted with psionic ability to such an extent that he can alter reality itself. He can also take possession of other beings, but he's so powerful that the energy literally burns them out. Proteus is cool, but probably not the villain fans were expecting. No Mr. Sinister? Come on.
X-Men: Apocalypse opens May 27th. Check out some new photos as well as an international TV spot.
