Guillermo Del Toro To Direct Cold War Drama Starring Octavia Spencer and Sally Hawkins

Following Crimson Peak's box office failure and the way Pacific Rim 2 was yanked out from under him, it's no surprise Guillermo Del Toro is looking to do something different. However, his next move has to be unexpected for even his most loyal fans, as he's taking on a Cold War-era romance featuring two Oscar caliber stars.

Octavia Spencer (The Help, The Divergent Series) and Sally Hawkins (Blue Jasmine, Godzilla) are starring in an untitled Cold War love story which Del Toro will direct, write, and produce. Plot details are unknown but the story will include some otherworldly elements and is set in America circa 1963.

Fox Searchlight are backing this one, guaranteeing it won't be a massive blockbuster like his projects for Legendary and Warner Bros. It's an interesting step for Del Toro, and one that his fans may not want to go along with. He's still got his black & white film about Luchadores battling vampires, and a potential adaptation of horror novels "Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark". [Deadline]
