That headline should be enough to send your eyeballs flying out of their sockets. Zack Snyder, the director who loves his movies as noisy and substance free as they can get is working on an adaptation of The Fountainhead, the first major novel of libertarian icon, Ayn Rand. How is this happening? He tells THR...
"We have 'The Last Photograph' [developing] that I've been working on for a long time. It's a small, sort of weird project about a war photographer in Afghanistan. I have been working on 'The Fountainhead.' I've always felt like 'The Fountainhead' was such a thesis on the creative process and what it is to create something. Warner Bros. owns [Ayn Rand’s] script and I’ve just been working on that a little bit."
Er, yeah, that's one way of describing it. The Fountainhead is one of the original cornerstones of Rand's fierce devotion to the idea of Objectivism and rational egoism, basically to be as selfish as one wants to be at all times. The story centers on an architect named Howard Rourke who battles against societal conventions in an effort to succeed strictly on his own terms. Rand adapted the book for King Vidor's 1949 film starring Gary Cooper and Patricia Neal.
So, let's not think for a second that Snyder is somehow the kindred spirit of Ron Paul just because he wants to make The Fountainhead. Based on his comments it's clear he's not thinking too hard about the ideological aspects of it, just as he likely didn't think too hard on the ideological aspects of Frank Miller's 300, which is pretty much on the opposite end of the spectrum. And who knows when or if this will ever happen, anyway, since he'll be neck deep in superheroes for most of the next few years.
