Looney Tunes didn't exactly have the best character on their hands with Speedy Gonzales. Sure, his name became synonymous with someone who is quicker than a jack rabbit, but the character was a pretty insulting Mexican stereotype. Not only that, but the dynamic of his 'toons were the same as the superior Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote. So why is there an animated movie about the fleet-footed rodent on the way? Your guess is as good as mine.
THR reports that Mexican actor/filmmaker Eugenio Derbez will be voicing Speedy in the film, while there's yet to be a director attached at this point. The rodent debuted in 1955 and over the years has mostly faced off against Sylvester the Cat while shouting"¡Ándale! ¡Ándale! ¡Arriba! ¡Arriba!" from underneath his giant sombrero. Yeah, there's a reason the Looney Tunes DVD box set comes with a warning about "ethnic and racial prejudices". Seriously, look it up yourself. The prototype version of Speedy was even more insulting, believe it or not.
A few years ago George Lopez was set to voice the character in a different movie, and it wouldn't be a surprise if he was somehow involved here, too. Expect Warner Bros. to move rapidly on this one. ¡Ándale!
