Remember that film set against the backdrop of the Austin music scene that Terrence Malick has been working on forever? The one that's seen Christian Bale strolling around Austin City Limits looking like a guy who wandered off the beaten path? That film is Weightless (formerly Lawless), and it's been in production for more than five years already. During that time Malick has completed two equally atrocious features, To the Wonder and Knight of Cups, and now Weightless is nearly ready to be shown off, too.
The British Board of Film Classification has revealed the runtime to be 145 likely-grueling minutes, plus 5-seconds that will feel like forever. Bale will be joined by a cast they say includes Ryan Gosling, Cate Blanchett, Rooney Mara, Haley Bennett, Natalie Portman, Michael Fassbender, Val Kilmer, Benicio Del Toro, Clifton Collins Jr., Angela Bettis, Bérénice Marlohe, Florence Welch, and Holly Hunter. Yeah, we'll see about that.
Knight of Cups had much the same cast and an extensive list of A-list supporting stars who barely showed up on screen. Don't be surprised if the same thing happens here. The film, which follows two intersecting love triangles in the Austin music scene, is currently set to have its world premiere in the U.K. on June 24th, which means it could turn up at the Glastonbury music festival. Stateside it's always possible it plays in some way at ACL since so much of it was shot there, or we could see it on the film festival circuit late this year or next. Gee I can hardly wait...
