We don't typically think of Colin Firth as an actor given to blockbusters or long-running franchises, but that has undoubtedly changed of late. He recently agreed to return for Kingsman: The Golden Circle, which was a little surprising, and later this year he'll be back alongside Renee Zellwegger for Bridget Jones's Baby. Fortunately he still finds time for other projects that are less about box office, such as the latest film by Far from the Madding Crowd director, Thomas Vinterberg.
Firth is in talks to join Matthias Schoenaerts in Vinterberg's submarine movie, Kursk. Penned by Robert Rodat (Saving Private Ryan), it tells the true survival story of the titular submarine and its crew who fought to survive when the sub sank in the Barents Sea in 2000. No word on Firth's role but does it really matter? The combination of Firth, Schoenaerts and Vinterberg (who worked together on 'Madding Crowd' last year) is about as promising as it gets.
Next up for Firth is this fall's potential Oscar-worthy turn as Daniel Crowhurst in Deep Water, directed by James Marsh (Man on Wire) and centering on the eccentric yachtsman's final race. [Deadline]
