Johnny Depp Joins Brett Ratner For Dominique Strauss-Kahn Film, 'The Libertine'

Before you check the date to make sure this isn't 2004 and a story on Johnny Depp's previous film titled The Libertine, let me assure you that it isn't. Although, to be honest, some of the themes are eerily similar. Deadline reports Depp will star in Brett Ratner's upcoming movie inspired by Dominique Strauss-Kahn, the French politician whose career was destroyed in a 2011 sex scandal.

Ratner will be at the helm, reuniting with Depp who he worked with on Black Mass as a producer. Penned by Ben Kopit, the story centers on a powerful French politician awaiting trial in New York City for sexual assault against a hotel maid. Strauss-Kahn was head of the International Monetary Fund but was forced to resign the position when the scandal broke.

While this sounds great, even with Ratner at the helm, this territory was covered tremendously by Abel Ferrara's Welcome to New York just two years ago. Then again, hardly anybody saw that one for various reasons (France has basically censored it) so the story would be a fresh one for American audiences.
