1. Finding Dory (review here)- $136.1M
What was that about Pixar making too many sequels? I'm sorry, but did you say it's been too long since Finding Nemo? Obviously, the long wait only made the heart grow fonder because Finding Dory broke weekend records by opening with a whopping $136.1M, making it the biggest animated debut ever, surpassing Shrek the Third's $121M. It's also the biggest Disney release EVER for a film that isn't Marvel or Star Wars, and trails only Jurassic World for the June all-time record. Pile on another $50M overseas and you're looking at $186M for a single weekend, that's not too shabby. With these numbers it won't be long before Marlin gets lost and somebody has to go find him, too.
2. Central Intelligence (review here)- $34.5M
The action-comedy pairing of Kevin Hart and Dwayne "The Rock' Johnson in Central Intelligence scored a healthy $34.5M, and it probably would have been higher if it wasn't for that pesky Pixar. This is about par for the course for Hart comedies, which nearly always perform well. The difference is the reviews are much stronger this time, and a lot of it has to do with Johnson, who takes on much of the comedic focus while Hart plays his second. It's an interesting twist that audiences seem to have responded to; not surprising since he's been carrying movies just like this on his shoulders for years now.
3. The Conjuring 2- $15.5M/$71.7M
4. Now You See Me 2- $9.6M/$41.3
5. Warcraft- $6.5M/$37.7M
Those numbers are pretty ugly for the $160M Warcraft, but worldwide the picture is much brighter with $318M. So when you suddenly get Warcraft 2 just remember this is the reason why.
6. X-Men: Apocalypse- $5.21M/$$146M
7. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows- $5.2M/$71.9M
8. Me Before You- $4.1M/$46.3M
9. Alice Through the Looking Glass- $3.6M/$69.3M
