Concerned that John Boyega would be stuck in an endless cycle of Star Wars movies from here until the end of his career? Not to worry because he's lining up a wide and diverse slate of projects, from James Ponsoldt's tech thriller The Circle, Pacific Rim 2, and hopefully soon we'll get the release of urban drama Imperial Dreams (reviewed here). But he's far from finished, and his latest role will have him working alongside The Hurt Locker director, Kathryn Bigelow, in what promises to be another controversial and timely film.
THR reports Boyega will star in Bigelow's untitled movie about the racially-charged 1967 Detroit Riots. The film reunites Bigelow with The Hurt Locker and Zero Dark Thirty writer, Mark Boal, and will co-star Game of Thrones' Hannah Murray. The 5-day riots began with the police raid of an unlicensed bar and exploded into a full-scale conflict.
No word on when shooting begins and of course it will have to fit around Boyega's busy schedule. The hope is to have it ready by next year which marks the 50th anniversary of the riots.
