Brie Larson Officially Cast As 'Captain Marvel'

The Marvel panel at Comic-Con is wrapped, and naturally it came with no shortage of surprises and confirmations. This year a lot of attention was given to Captain Marvel, their first female-led superhero movie after years of fans clamoring for one. For weeks Brie Larson has been the frontrunner for the title role, and tonight Marvel made it official. Well, so did Larson...

So who is Captain Marvel? Her real name is Carol Danvers and she's one of the stalwarts of the Avengers, and a former team leader. She was an Air Force pilot who gained her powers from alien DNA, giving her ability of super-strength, flight, and power blasts. Want to know how the X-Man known as Rogue gained most of her abilities? Back when she was still a villain she stole them from Captain Marvel, that's how. It's a long story.

This is a big deal get for Marvel, as Larson is hotter than ever after winning an Oscar for her performance in Room. She was also a Comic-Con presence for her role in Kong: Skull Island.

Now all the film needs is a female director to go along with co-writers Nicole Perlman (Guardians of the Galaxy) and Meg LeFauve (Inside Out). So far the top names considered are Jennifer Kent (The Babadook), Elizabeth Wood (White Girl), and Karyn Kusama (Jennifer's Body), and Niki Caro (Whale Rider). Captain Marvel opens March 8th 2019.
