You know me, I love professional wrestling. Always have. Back in the '80s I wasn't just a fan of WWF and the NWA, but also G.L.O.W. aka the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling. Co-created by Jackie Stallone, yes Sly's mommy, G.L.O.W. ran for four seasons out of Las Vegas and featured women who were actresses more than professional wrestlers. Kinda sounds a lot like the WWE today, doesn't it? As we learned a few months ago, Netflix and Orange is the New Black's Jenji Kohan are developing a sitcom based on G.L.O.W., and Alison Brie will is its first confirmed superstar.
Brie, who has been great in everything from Community to Mad Men to Sleeping with Other People, will play a an unemployed actress who“finds one last attempt to live her dreams in the form of a weekly series about female wrestlers.” The half hour series will focus on the "big hair and body slams" of the wrestling industry, which is cool because more often than not the backstage stuff is more exciting than what makes it on air.
Liz Flahive (Homeland) and Carly Mensch (Orange Is the New Black) will serve as showrunners on the 10-episode series, which will likely air some time in 2017. What's unclear is how much in-ring action there will be, if any. Will the storylines culminate in matches between the superstars? If so we can probably expect to see some former WWE Divas hired to fill out the roster. I wouldn't be at all surprised if Kelly Kelly or Eve Torres are already on speed dial. [Variety]
