It was all a clever ruse pulled off by director Adam Wingard and Lionsgate, letting everyone think their upcoming film, The Woods, was just another horror about teens lost in a haunted forest. But the joke was on us, and at San Diego Comic-Con we learned it was actually titled Blair Witch, a sequel to the genre classic, The Blair Witch Project, the granddaddy of all found footage movies.
Can this new film hope to be a national phenomenon in the way the original was? Remember, there were millions of people who swore up and down that The Blair Witch Project was completely real, such was the new nature of found footage movies. That may be too ambitious of a goal but the latest trailer does promise a ton of scares that could reach an entirely different audience.
This is indeed a true sequel and centers on the mystery surrounding the disappearance of Heather Donahue, who was lost in the first film. Here's the synopsis:
A group of college students venture into the Black Hills Forest in Maryland to uncover the mysteries surrounding the disappearance of James’ sister who many believe is connected to the legend of the Blair Witch. At first the group is hopeful, especially when a pair of locals offer to act as guides through the dark and winding woods, but as the endless night wears on, the group is visited by a menacing presence. Slowly, they begin to realize the legend is all too real and more sinister than they could have imagined.
Blair Witch haunts theaters on September 16th. Check out the new trailer below courtesy of Collider.
