Christoph Waltz May Join 'Alita: Battle Angel' And Not As A Villain
James Cameron has kept his manga adaptation Alita: Battle Angel in development limbo long enough, and now he's piecing it back together like the titular cyborg. Robert Rodriguez (Sin City) has been on board to direct for some time, and recently Rosa Salazar (Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials) signed to play Alita. And now it appears the film has landed an Oscar winner in Christoph Waltz, who won't be playing a bad guy for once.
THR reports Waltz is in talks to play Doctor Dyson Ido, a cyber-physician who finds the broken down and amnesiac cyborg Alita in a junkyard and rebuilds her into a lethal bounty hunter. The story, first conceived Yukito Kishiro in 1990, follows Alita as she attempts to recover her past. And yes, Doctor Ido is a genuinely decent mentor to Alita, although he does have secrets which will likely be explored.
20th Century Fox is hoping for a July 2018 release meaning Rodriguez should get shooting by next fall.
