Last night after coming out of the Fantastic Beasts screening, a fellow critic told me he was about to see La La Land, and to please tell him it wasn't that good. The reason is that he had heard so many glowing reviews that he needed someone to temper his expectations. My response? "Well, I think it's the best movie of the year, so..."
I wasn't much help.
The buzz is real about Damien Chazelle's magical musical experience, which stars Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone in yet another charming love story. Heck, those two managed to make Gangster Squad (barely) watchable. They click like never before in the song-and-dance story of a Hollywood piano player and aspiring actress as they try to make it big in a business that crushes dreams and hearts alike.
Also starring John Legend, J.K. Simmons, Rosemarie DeWitt, and Finn Wittrock, La La Land opens December 2nd.
