Box Office: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 Predictably Crushes the Competition
1. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2- $145M
Marvel may have the only films to continuously score higher on their openings with sequels. In the most odd franchise of the Marvel stable numbers predicatably shoot through the roof, while the $150 million dollar weekend is still impressive the nearly $500 million take worldwide is the real eye-opener. Remember the good old days when a 200 million dollar total take was impressive?
2. The Fate of the Furious- $8.5M/$207M
3. The Boss Baby- $6.1M/$156M
The Alec Baldwin voiced animated comedy jumps two spots from number 5 last week back into the top 3. Likely to take $200 million by the time is everything is said and done this becomes a solid entry for Dreamworks.
4. How to be a Latin Lover- $5.2M/$20.6M
Losing half it's audience but breaking the $20M mark this flick, which seems like a no-brainer for a direct to Netflix release has made as much of a mark as it could have hoped.
5. Beauty and the Beast- $4.9M/$487.5M
Moving back into the top 5 in its eigth week of release? That's unheard of in this time of opening weekend or bust. If nothing else I think it's safe to say we can expect to see all of Disney's time honored properties converted to live-action.
6. The Circle (review)- $4M/15.7M
Emma Watson has the distinction of holding consecutive places in the top 10, though the latter seems to continue to seriously underperform. Tom Hanks and Emma Watson and it bombs? I guess it's true the age of the movie star carrying a film are over
7. Baahuball 2: The Conclusion- $3.2M/$16.1M
8. Gifted- $2M/$19.2M
9. Going in Style- $1.9M/$40M
10. Smurfs: The Lost Village- $1.8M/$40.5M
Forty million seems like a ton of money but not when you're talking about an animated feature of a known property like the Smurfs. Their first outing went pretty well but with returns like this I think the future of the little blue guys is totally smurfed.
