Box Office: 'Snatched' Snatches $17.5M While 'King Arthur' Is A Royal Dud

1. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2- $63M/$246.1M
2. Snatched (review)- $17.5M
While there's a chance moms and daughters went to see King Arthur: Legend of the Sword to drool over Charlie Hunnam, the true Mother's Day movie this weekend was Snatched. The Amy Schumer comedy brought Goldie Hawn back to the big screen for the first time since The Banger Sisters in 2002, and it opened to a solid $17.5M. Those aren't Trainwreck numbers but it's a pretty good start what was clearly being positioned as counter-programming. I mean, it ended up beating King Arthur pretty easily, and cost roughly 1/4 of the budget.
3. King Arthur: Legend of the Sword (review)- $14.7M
This one always had the smell of disaster on it. The sad thing, King Arthur: Legend of the Sword isn't that bad a movie. I've said before that it looked like this year's The Legend of Tarzan; a bigger-than-necessary spectacle of an aged property few are clamoring to see revived. Guy Ritchie's film has been kicking around Warner Bros. for a while, and endured multiple release dates, production woes, and a decided lack of buzz, which is why it was odd they were openly discussing a 6-movie franchise. Nah, that ain't happenin', especially since it doesn't seem to be doing anything overseas, either.
4. The Fate of the Furious- $5.3M/$215M
5. The Boss Baby- $4.6M/$162.3M
6. Beauty and the Beast- $3.8M/$493.1M
7. How to be a Latin Lover- $3.7M/$26.1M
8. Lowriders- $2.4M
I can only imagine the bulk of the audience for Lowriders, which opened at a surprisingly robust $2.4M in only 296 theaters, comes from the west coast since it has little presence here on the east. That and the movie is a quintessentially L.A. story, following a Latino family and the lowrider car culture that has become part of their legacy. The film stars Demian Bichir, Eva Longoria, Melissa Benoist, and a mostly Latino cast, and as we've seen in a lot recently, like with How to be a Latin Lover, targeting this specific audience has proven fruitful. I don't know how successful an expansion will be, but for now this car is running smoothly.
9. The Circle- $1.7M/$18.9M
10. Baahuball 2: The Conclusion- $1.5M/$18.9M
