Claire Foy Eyes Lisbeth Salander Role In 'The Girl In The Spider's Web'

With Claire Foy moving on from Netflix's hit royal drama, The Crown, when it goes into season three (two is shooting now), the actress is taking advantage of her success with an increased presence on the big screen. She'll be starring with Andrew Garfield in Andy Serkis' Breathe (check out the first image here), and now she's entered the running for two prominent roles. One is an iconic female character and a possible franchise launcher, while the other is the latest film from La La Land director, Damien Chazelle.

First up, Foy is Sony's top pick to play anti-social computer hacker Lisbeth Salander in The Girl in the Spider's Web, which Fede Alvarez will direct as a total reboot away from David Fincher's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Last we'd heard Natalie Portman and Scarlett Johansson were up for the role, while original star Rooney Mara openly hoped for a return. However the finalists came down to Foy and Felicity Jones, with Foy apparently the frontrunner. It's a big role for whoever ultimately lands it. The Swedish films helped launch Noomi Rapace's career stateside, and Fincher's version earned Mara a Best Actress nomination.

Meanwhile, Foy is also in the mix for the female lead in Chazelle's Neil Armstrong biopic, First Man, starring alongside Ryan Gosling.  The problem is that both movies will be shooting at the same time for the same release window in October 2018, so Foy is going to have to pick. Go for the potential blockbuster studio movie, or the drama from a proven winner like Chazelle? These are the decisions careers are made of. [THR]
