After a pretty sweet run that saw him write two awards-worthy films, Sicario and Hell or High Water, Taylor Sheridan is in the midst of the most important year of his career. His directorial debut Wind River debuted at Sundance (and is great in my opinion) and is now headed to Cannes where it hopes to pick up more buzz. But he's also got a new TV series on the way, Yellowstone, which just took a big step forward by landing its first star.
Kevin Costner has agreed to star in Yellowstone, and it sounds like a perfect match. He plays John Dutton, a rancher who controls the largest contiguous ranch in the United States, which is under constant threat by greedy land developers, an Indian reservation, and the government itself who will stop and nothing to tear apart his empire. Costner is no stranger to epic, sweeping stories of frontier life so he should be right at home. This is material Sheridan is also quite comfortable with, and he should be able to say everything he wants to throughout the 10-episode series.
Yellowstone goes into production this fall and will debut as part of the Paramount Network (formerly Spike) in summer 2018.
