French director Mia Hansen-Løve is rapidly becoming one of my favorite directors, and apparently others are starting to take notice, as well. Her last couple of films, the EDM drama Eden and last year's superb Things to Come (possibly the better of Isabelle Huppert's incredible performances in 2016) have the director on a hot streak. While she's already set to shoot the hostage drama Maya this summer, she's already begun lining up the cast for what will come afterwards.
Greta Gerwig, Mia Wasikowska, and John Turturro will star in Bergman Island, making this her English-language debut. Hansen-Love was inspired to write the script while vacationing (likely with her then-significant other director Olivier Assayas) on the island of Faro, which was the home of Ingmar Bergman. Whether the drama is inspired by her relationship with Assayas is unclear, but the synopsis certainly reads like it could be:
The picture revolves around an American filmmaking couple who retreat to the island for the summer to each write screenplays for their upcoming films in an act of pilgrimage to the place that inspired Bergman.
As the summer and their screenplays advance, the lines between reality and fiction start to blur against the backdrop of the Island’s wild landscape.
Filming will begin next year around summer time, giving us another movie to look forward to in 2018. [ScreenDaily]
