Guy Ritchie Thinks He'd Be A Good Fit For 'Suicide Squad 2'
While a majority of critics may have panned it, Suicide Squad turned out to be one of Warner Bros.' most profitable movies with $745M, plus impressive numbers on home release. That's enough to guarantee a sequel, but when it happens it will be without director David Ayer who has moved over to spinoff, Gotham City Sirens. A number of names have been in the mix to replace him, such as Mel Gibson, Jaume Collet-Serra, Ruben Fleischer, and David Goyer, but now you can add one more who has a lengthy track record with the studio.
Sherlock Holmes and King Arthur: Legend of the Sword director Guy Ritchie told Variety [via GeekTyrant] that he'd have loved to direct Suicide Squad 2, if only the timing could have worked out...
“I quite fancy doing ‘Suicide Squad 2,’ because I thought I could do a good job with it. I can’t do it because I’m doing something else, but I’ve felt I could really do something with that."
That something else is, strangely enough, Disney's live-action Aladdin, a project that doesn't exactly scream "Get me Guy Ritchie!"
It's possible WB had Ritchie on their own internal short list, and may have even made him an offer only to have timing take him out of contention. Disappointing because he's better suited to DC's team of antiheroes than mucking around with a Disney classic.
