Ridley Scott Has Rethought The Number Of 'Alien: Covenant' Sequels
Ridley Scott may be lessening the scope of his Alien revival following Alien: Covenant. While he already has plans to shoot the next one, tentatively titled Alien: Awakening, in the next fourteen months, he's previously talked about as many as four follow-ups, which is one Hell of a commitment both for Scott and viewers. Scott now seems to have rethought that number, telling Yahoo! Movies...
“I don’t know. [I’ll make] maybe two more [films], or maybe one more, I don’t know.”
No word on why Scott has changed his mind, but it could have something to do with the mixed early reaction to Covenant. Speaking of which, Scott talked about what he got wrong with Prometheus, which received a similarly tepid response...
“….we discovered from it that [the fans] were really frustrated. They wanted to see more of the original [monster] and I thought he was definitely cooked, with an orange in his mouth. So I thought: ‘Wow, OK, I’m wrong...The fans, in a funny kind of way — they’re not the final word — but they are the reflection of your doubts about something, and then you realize ‘I was wrong’ or ‘I was right.’ I think that’s where it comes in. I think you’re not sensible if you don’t actually take [the fans’ reaction] into account.”
You can tell from the marketing that the xenomorph will play more of a role in a film that, spiritually, is closer to Alien than Prometheus was. Alien: Covenant opens May 19th.
