It may not seem like it, but Universal's remake of Scarface is happening. They're going to make sure of it, and the years of struggles have only emboldened them. This year alone they've seen Diego Luna snag the role of the famous crime lord, only to have its director, Antoine Fuqua, drop out at the same time. And while a short list of potential directors emerged a few weeks later, the one to actually get the job wasn't on the list at all.
Suicide Squad director David Ayer is in talks to replace Fuqua, and on paper it certainly makes sense. He's spent his career making gritty movies set in the criminal underworld or of corrupt cops, and Scarface should have plenty of both. However, the script was most recently rewritten by the Coen Brothers, which should be interesting. I'm not sure if Ayer's style fits with theirs, but it'll be worth seeing to find out. This version will be set in modern day Los Angeles and follows a Mexican immigrant who will do anything to attain wealth and power.
Scarface has an August 2018 release date which means Ayer's Harley Quinn spinoff, Gotham City Sirens, is a long ways off. [Deadline]
