18 Great Overlooked Films Of 2018

So what makes for a great overlooked film, or a hidden gem as I like to call them? For me, it's simple. Any movie that resonated with me, that I found some connection with, and feel others will find a similar connection if they give it a chance. As with any year, there are so many movies that it's easy for a lot of great ones to simply fly under the radar. Fantastic performances go unnoticed, unique storylines sit waiting to be discovered (or copied), and as usual I struggled to find just 15 to put down here.

That's why I cheated and made it 18. Not that it's cheating when it's my list, right?

I went with films that surprised me with their spirit, like the Kodi Smit-Mcphee survival thriller Alpha, or spoke my language politically like The Oath did. Some of these movies spoke to my baser instincts, as the giallo-inspired Let the Corpses Tan did,  while Ibiza put both of my favorite actresses together for a silly international comedy. And that Brett Haley; I think he has a movie on my list every single year. There's a lot of good to be found in each of these movies, so check 'em out below and then check 'em out at home!

And when you're done, be sure to follow all of our end of the year coverage here!

'Ibiza' Trailer: Gillian Jacobs And Vanessa Bayer Party Hearty In Spain

Netflix, you had me at Gillian Jacobs and Vanessa Bayer. Ever since the comedy Ibiza was announced last year it has been the movie most at the front of my mind because of its hilarious leading ladies. I'll watch both of them in anything, I don't care what it is.  And now today the first trailer has arrived and excuse me while I put it in a loop.

Jacobs, Bayer, and Phoebe Robinson (I Love Dick) star as three friends who fly off to Barcelona for a work trip, only for one Jacobs' character to fall in love with a hot DJ played by Game of Thrones' Richard Madden. On a whim she ditches work and follows him to Ibiza, where shit goes cray cray.  The reasoning for the rash decision is sound, too...

"Some people land on the moon. Others cure diseases. You smash this DJ."

Yeah, try and debate THAT!

Okay it looks like Rough Night and Sleepover had a Netflix comedy baby but so what? There can never be enough of Bayer acting like the resident goofball and I've missed her since she left SNL.

Directed by Alex Richanbach from a screenplay by Lauryn Kahn, Ibiza hits Netflix on May 25th.

Netflix Reads My Mind, Casts Gillian Jacobs & Vanessa Bayer In 'Ibiza'

Netflix is not only controlling my life with way too many good shows to binge on, but now they're reaching into my brain and putting my two favorite ladies in the same movie. Dangerous.  Don't Think Twice's Gillian Jacobs and former SNL castmember Vanessa Bayer will star in the comedy, Ibiza, alongside 2 Dope Queens' Phoebe Robinson.

Formerly titled I'm In Love With The DJ when it was set up at Sony, the film is written by Lauryn Kahn with Will Ferrell and Adam McKay producing under their Gary Sanchez banner. Kahn is McKay's longtime assistant who sold her script for He's Fucking Perfect a couple of years ago, and that one is currently in development albeit with a different title for obvious reasons. Alex Richanbach, a Funny or Die vet, will direct.

As for Ibiza, it stars Jacobs as a woman who brings her two best friends on a work trip to Barcelona and Ibiza that quickly goes out of hand as they hunt for a popular DJ. Casting is currently underway for a shoot that will take place in London, Spain, and Los Angeles. Excuse me while I take a few weeks off to bone up on my turntablism.

I'm unfamiliar with Robinson, other than the one time I heard her 2 Dope Queens podcast with Jessica Williams. Jacobs has been under the Netflix umbrella for a while now, having completed two seasons of Love opposite Paul Rust. Bayer just finished her run on SNL (her final episode is classic), and was recently seen in Office Christmas Party and Carrie Pilby.
