Quentin Tarantino Confirms He Won't Direct 'Star Trek'

A Quentin Tarantino mulls over his 10th and supposedly final movie, a wrench was thrown in the works when reports surfaced he might direct an R-rated Star Trek film. It seemed an unusual way to close out a career, and I think most of Tarantino's fans have sorta blown off the idea, especially when it became known it would be Mark L. Smith (The Revenant) writing the script. Does Tarantino ever direct another person's script?

In a recent conversation with Deadline, Tarantino puts the kibosh on any hopes he'll be directing Star Trek. This despite his being a huge fan of Chris Pine, as revealed when he listed Unstoppable as one of the top movies of the decade.

“I think they might make that movie, but I just don’t think I’m going to direct it,” Tarantino said."It’s a good idea. They should definitely do it and I’ll be happy to come in and give them some notes on the first rough cut.”

Smith's script is still out there, so I guess it's always possible Tarantino or someone else can come back to it. As we know, Paramount has moved on with a Star Trek reboot led by Lucy in the Sky filmmaker Noah Hawley, so things have moved past both Tarantino and Pine at this point. Whatever Tarantino does next, I think it's safe to say it'll be 100% his own movie and not part of a studio franchise.

Noah Hawley Teases A New Take For His 'Star Trek' Movie

Thanks to Star Trek Discovery and the upcoming Picard series, Star Trek feels fresh in a way it hasn't in a long time. That's on the streaming side, though; while the big screen franchise is venturing into undiscovered country. With Simon Pegg suggesting the upcoming Star Trek movie by Noah Hawley won't be a sequel, and may even boast a totally new cast, Hawley's recent comments to Deadline throw gasoline on the fire.

While Hawley doesn't spill any plot info, he's eager to lean into the mystery surrounding the cast of his Star Trek movie...

“I have my own take on ‘Star Trek,’” said Hawley. “And going back to what I loved about the series ‘Next Generation,’ when a lot of franchises focus on ‘might makes right,’ ‘Star Trek’ is about exploration and humanity at its best, and diversity and creative problem-solving.”

He added, “There’s nothing better than that moment when William Shatner puts on his reading glasses and lowers Khan’s shields. It doesn’t cost anything. But it’s that triumphant feeling about smarting your enemy. For me it’s about to getting to those elements of the show. I don’t necessarily find action in and of itself interesting unless it’s story. So, it’s early days, I’m still talking with Paramount and I have a take and I gotta write a script.”

As for whether his movie will tie-in with the Star Trek universe being built over on CBS Access, Hawley says he isn't beholden to anything but the property itself...

“I have my own story and want to make sure as I did with ‘Fargo’ and ‘Legion’ that I’m respectful to the underlying material. That I’m not unintentionally changing things that people love or feel passionate about. So, it’s important to do that research as I go.”

So Pegg wasn't wrong, and it makes me wonder if we'll ever see those characters again or if Star Trek Beyond is how they'll go out. At least to me, Hawley isn't the most inspiring filmmaker, especially after Lucy in the Sky, but I'm curious to see where Star Trek goes from here.

Quentin Tarantino Says He's "Steering Away" From His R-Rated 'Star Trek' Film

Quentin Tarantino fans have been plagued by the thought Once Upon a Time in Hollywood was his ninth feature film, with plans for him to retire after number 10. With only one more movie to go, it was unfathomable his career would end on an R-rated Star Trek film, but that's exactly what we've been hearing about for months. Tarantino wouldn't really end things on a sci-fi franchise movie, would he?  Well, based on an interview with Consequence of Sound, Star Trek is becoming less likely by the day...

“I think I’m steering away from Star Trek, but I haven’t had an official conversation with those guys yet. In a strange way, it seems like this movie, Hollywood, would be my last. So, I’ve kind of taken the pressure off myself to make that last big voilà kind of statement.”

With Paramount hiring Noah Hawley to direct the fourth Star Trek movie, the chances are slim Tarantino will wait around to put his spin on the franchise.

Tarantino's statement there is interesting, and he's right. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is such a huge, sprawling love letter, encompassing so much of Tarantino's love of cinema and fantasy, that it would make a perfect button to his career...

"I mean to such a degree there was a moment when I was writing and went, “Should I do this now? Should I do something else? Is this the 10th one?” No, no don’t stop the planets from aligning, what are you, Galactus? If the Earth is saying do it, do it. Not that it was an argument, but a little thought, like, “Well, if I’m gonna go out like Max Ophüls style, Lola Montez, this is it, and if It’s not good, then all my other work is trash, alright.” This would have been the one. But in a weird way, it actually kind of freed me up. I mean, I have no idea what the story of the next one’s going to be. I don’t even have a clue."

Might I suggest Kill Bill 3, sir?  Tarantino's been talking about this recently, but when I met him a couple of weeks ago while in Hollywood, the only movie I asked him about was Kill Bill 3. His exact words were "I'm thinking about it! I have ideas!" Not a promise by any means, and no different than the shit he's been saying for years, but I'm happy to do my part to keep him talking about a sequel.

'Star Trek 4' Takes Off With 'Lucy In The Sky' Director Noah Hawley

I think we can put to bed any hope of seeing Quentin Tarantino's R-rated take on Star Trek, because Paramount has given command of the Starship Enterprise so somebody else. Collider reports Fargo and Legion creator Noah Hawley will write and direct a fourth Star Trek film, keeping the same cast as the prior three movies from J.J. Abrams.

Hawley makes for an interesting choice. He recently made his feature directorial debut with Lucy in the Sky, a space drama led by Natalie Portman and Jon Hamm. The film didn't exactly click with critics or at the box office, but obviously that hasn't slowed Hawley down in the least. He'll take charge of a cast that will bring back Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, and more. Abrams, who directed the first two movies, will remain on board as a producer through his Bad Robot label.

We don't know much about the plot, but the film won't have anything to do with Tarantino's movie written by Mark L. Smith. It also will be separate from the shelved movie from director S.J. Clarkson that would've seen Chris Hemsworth return as Kirk's father. That film couldn't get off the ground largely due to stalled contract negotiations.

Quentin Tarantino's 'Star Trek' Will Use The JJ Abrams Cast, But Says "F**k That" To Anything Else

I've been having an ongoing discussion with a friend about Quentin Tarantino and his possible R-rated Star Trek movie. She's not a fan of his, nor of him doing Trek, thinking it wouldn't be in the spirit of the long-running franchise. Me, I'm fine with it, and see it as no different than JJ Abrams swooping in and making a series of movies that were distinctly his. That's what filmmakers do. And that's certainly what Tarantino plans to do, but what we didn't know is the animosity he has towards Abrams' movies, revealed in a recent edition of the HappySadConfused podcast.

As you well know, Tarantino could be directing his own Star Trek movie, which features a script by The Revenant's Mark L. Smith. It shouldn't be a shock that Tarantino would want to do his own thing and put his own take on the classic sci-fi material, but he's going to keep the cast led by Chris Pine around. However, that's about the only thing of Abrams' that he intends to use, showing a real disdain for the director's time travel shenanigans in particular...

“Now, I still don’t quite understand how—and J.J. can’t explain it to me and my editor [Fred Raskin] has tried to explain to me and I still don’t get it—about… something happened in the first movie that now kinda wiped the slate clean? I don’t buy that. I don’t like it. I don’t appreciate it. Fuck that. I don’t like that.”

I don't think any of us should be surprised that Tarantino digs the original Star Trek stuff best, and he was asked if that was the reason he disliked Abrams' run so much...

“I want the whole series to have happened! It just hasn’t happened yet. And Benedict Cumberbatch or whatever his name is, is not Khan. Khan is Khan. And I told JJ, ‘I don’t understand this, I don’t like it’ and he said, ‘Ignore it! Nobody likes it! I don’t understand it! Do whatever you want! If you want to do it the exact way it happened in the [original series], it can.'”

Other than 2009's Star Trek, much of what Abrams and later Justin Lin did is pretty bland, if you ask me. I don't care what happens to it, and based on the dwindling box office I'm not in the minority. But does that mean everything should be ignored? Sure, but only if Tarantino brings in an all-new cast. Why keep the actors identifiable as Abrams' cast if you're just going to do something new, anyway? I guess we really don't know what Tarantino is doing yet, or even if the movie will happen at all, do we?

Comic-Con: 'Picard' Trailer Confirms Return Of Brent Spiner As Data, Jeri Ryan As Seven Of Nine

The CBS All Access panel is taking place right now in Comic-Con's Hall H, and its focus is squarely on Star Trek. I'm not a huge fan of the franchise, myself, but Picard is something I've been interested in, and the new trailer has given me all the reasons I need to become an avid fan.

Patrick Stewart and the cast of the series are on hand, and it's been a celebration of Stewart and his role as Jean-Luc Picard. Stewart then went on to introduce the trailer and it had quite a few surprises: the return of Brent Spiner as Data, and Jeri Ryan as Star Trek Voyager's Borg known as Seven of Nine.

We also got looks at the previously-cast Santiago Cabrera, Michelle Hurd, Alison Pill, Harry Treadaway, Evan Evagora, and Isa Briones as Daj, a mysterious woman Picard takes under his protection.

Later, it was revealed that other The Next Generation stars would be part of the series, including Jonathan Frakes as William T. Riker and Marina Sirtis as Deanna Troi.

Picard is expected to hit CBS All Access in spring 2020.

Quentin Tarantino Is Cool With Retiring After His 'Star Trek' Movie

With Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Quentin Tarantino will have directed nine movies, one short of the ten he talked about retiring after. As for what that final movie may be, the only thing he might have coming up is Star Trek, but surely he wouldn't' end his career on a studio franchise flick, right? It'd be one of his originals, wouldn't' it? Don't be so sure.

Speaking with Cinemablend, Tarantino talked about his R-rated Star Trek movie which, at this point, is only a possibility to happen. But if it does, the filmmaker might use it as a "loophole" film to get around his promised ten...or, he won't do that and simply walk away as promised.

"The idea was to throw a loophole into it,” Tarantino said. “Which would be [to go], ‘Uhhh, I guess Star Trek doesn’t count. I can do Star Trek…but naturally, I would end on an original.'” 

“But the idea of doing ten isn’t to come up with a loophole,” he added. “I actually think, if I was going to do Star Trek, I should commit to it. It’s my last movie. There should be nothing left-handed about it. I don’t know if I’m going to do that, but that might happen.”

So the door is wide open here, and Tarantino could do just about anything. The real issue is whether Paramount moves forward on his Star Trek film, which we know will have a script by Mark L. Smith (The Revenant), and not Tarantino. It's unfathomable to me that he'd end on such a note, loophole or not. I mean...he's gotta make Kill Bill 3, right? Or is that just my wishful thinking?

Quentin Tarantino Confirms R-Rated 'Star Trek' Script Is Finished

When it comes to Quentin Tarantino's possible Star Trek movie, there's a lot more that we don't know than we do. Tarantino pitched the idea to producer JJ Abrams with the plan that it would be R-rated, with a script by The Revenant writer Mark L. Smith. Still, there has been very little movement on it and we don't even know if Tarantino would direct it, despite some sites claiming that he definitely will. 

No matter your thoughts on Tarantino, this is an interesting project that will either be a fresh take on the long-running sci-fi franchise, or a complete disaster that misses its point entirely. Any updates are appreciated at this point and the director has provided some brief ones to Empire.

“There’s a script that exists for it now, I need to weigh in on it, but haven’t been able to do that yet,” said Tarantino.

Knowing that a script is out there and ready for Tarantino's input is definitely exciting. He's obviously busy right now with Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, so it may be a while before he gets around to looking at Smith's work. One thing he can promise, though, is that his Star Trek will be R-rated, replying to the interviewer with...

“Oh yeah! It’s an R-rated movie. If I do it, it’ll be R-rated.”

Are you ready for a Star Trek full of violence, blood, F-bombs and N-words? It does look to be happening, and with Star Trek 4 on ice it may be the only one we get for a long time. Now that I think about it, do we even know if it would keep the same cast?

Quentin Tarantino's 'Star Trek' Movie Is Still A "Big Possibility", Script Already Completed

The prospect of a Star Trek movie from Quentin Tarantino remains fascinating, but we haven't heard much about it lately as he's been busy finishing Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.  With the fate of the franchise in flux right now Tarantino's movie may have more importance than ever, and it sounds like he's ready to get back to work on it.

Speaking with Slashfilm about his Netflix edition of The Hateful Eight, Tarantino says the chances are good his Star Trek movie will get done...

"It’s a very big possibility. I haven’t been dealing with those guys for a while cause I’ve been making my movie. But we’ve talked about a story and a script. The script has been written and when I emerge my head like Punxsutawney Phil, post-Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, we’ll pick up talking about it again."

The script he's talking about was written by The Revenant's Mark L. Smith, and the expectation is that it would be R-rated. Personally, I'd like to see a completely new cast just to set Tarantino's film off on its own. Samuel L. Jackson as Spock, anyone?

Last we heard of Star Trek 4 it still had S.J. Clarkson on board to direct it, but contract disputes with Chris Hemsworth and Chris Pine have stalled production. Nothing has changed on that front and who knows when we'll see a new Trek on screen.

Patrick Stewart To Return As Captain Picard In New 'Star Trek' Series

Those who know me know I don't watch a lot of TV, and there are very few shows I truly cherish. Star Trek: The Next Generation is one of them.  It's the Star Trek I grew up on (I kinda dig Deep Space Nine, too), and Patrick Stewart will forever be Captain Jean-Luc Picard. So today's news has made me smile wider than I have in weeks, because Stewart is coming back to Star Trek in a brand new series.

CBS has made it official that Patrick Stewart will return as Jean-Luc Picard in a new Star Trek series on the CBS All Access digital platform. The show will be exec-produced by Alex Kurtzman, current showrunner on Star Trek: Discovery, but that's all we know right now. Here's Kurtzman's statement:

With overwhelming joy, it’s a privilege to welcome Sir Patrick Stewart back to the Star Trek fold. For over 20 years, fans have hoped for the return of Captain Jean-Luc Picard and that day is finally here. We can’t wait to forge new ground, surprise people, and honor generations both new and old.

And of course, Stewart had a few thoughts of his own, tweeting that he never thought something like this would happen, but that he's ready to take the Captain's chair again.  Make it so!!

I will always be very proud to have been a part of Star Trek: The Next Generation, but when we wrapped that final movie in the spring of 2002, I truly felt my time with Star Trek had run its natural course. It is, therefore, an unexpected but delightful surprise to find myself excited and invigorated to be returning to Jean-Luc Picard and to explore new dimensions within him. Seeking out new life for him, when I thought that life was over.

During these past years, it has been humbling to hear many stories about how The Next Generation brought people comfort, saw them through difficult periods in their lives or how the example of Jean-Luc inspired so many to follow in his footsteps, pursuing science, exploration and leadership. After starring as Picard from 1987 to 1994, Stewart last played the role in 2002's Star Trek: Nemesis, which was pretty terrible. Of the four Star Trek movies the Next Generation crew were in, it might be the lousiest.

Finally I have a reason to subscribe to CBS All Access.  For how long will depend whether this new series is an ongoing or a miniseries event.

Zachary Quinto Lessens Hopes Of Tarantino's 'Star Trek' Happening

As movie fans it's hard not to be pumped at the idea of Star Trek movie by Quentin Tarantino, but the reality is that we may never see it happen. Simon Pegg threw a cold bucket of water on the idea a couple of weeks ago, basically saying that a lot is going on with the franchise right now and nothing is certain. And now it's Zachary Quinto's turn to impart some Spock-like wisdom on the situation, meaning we should probably temper our expectations.  He tells ET Canada...

“First of all, I think there’s a couple of scripts. Because there was a script being written before Quentin Tarantino came up with his idea for a potential film. And so I think they are kind of developing more than one. So I don’t know what is going to happen. Quentin is off doing another movie. So, I feel like we are in a state of anticipation. All of us are really excited about the idea of working with Quentin on a Trek film, but I know Simon Pegg and Doug Jung, who wrote the last film, are writing a script and there are another set of writers writing a script. So, I don’t know. I don’t know what’s going to happen.”

Echoes much of what Pegg said, with a couple of newsie tidbits thrown in. The first being that Simon Pegg and Doug Junk are following up their   script with another, and that a third script, likely by Patrick McKay and JD Payne, is also in the mix. That would leave Tarantino's as the one least advanced since he's busy developing Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Still no mention of The Revenant writer Mark L. Smith who was reportedly hired to do the actual scripting on Tarantino's Star Trek, which leads me to believe that was somewhat overblown.

Quentin Tarantino's R-Rated 'Star Trek' Film Lands 'The Revenant' Screenwriter

I can't think of a better way to end the crazy year of 2017 than with more news on Quentin Tarantino's Star Trek movie, something that would have been unfathomable just weeks ago. It was earlier this month that we first learned of Tarantino's pitch to J.J. Abrams and Paramount to direct the movie, which they loved and began setting into motion right away. A writer's room was set up with The Revenant screenwriter Mark L. Smith emerging as the frontrunner to pen the script, and now Deadline confirms this insane gig is his.

Smith is a known commodity to Abrams as he's also the writer behind Bad Robot's upcoming WWII film, Overlord. He was part of Tarantino's writers room that included Lindsey Beer (Chaos Walking), and Drew Pearce (Iron Man 3) and Megan Amram (The Good Place). Just the thought of a Tarantino writers room is bonkers to me. That Tarantino's not writing the script himself is still disappointing, but since he's already mandated it to be R-rated I suspect he'll also do some rewrites.

There's still no word on who would star in this movie, whether it will take place in the same universe as Abrams' movies, or if will be an expansion of Tarantino's favorite Star Trek episodes like "City on the Edge of Forever."

While Smith gets cracking on the script Tarantino will be busy working on his Manson-era film which opens in August 2019.

Quentin Tarantino's 'Star Trek' Movie Will Be R-Rated, Of Course

This is pretty extraordinary. Earlier this week the incredible news broke that Quentin Tarantino was negotiating to possibly direct a new Star Trek film for Paramount and producer J.J. Abrams. It didn't even seem real at the time because, despite Tarantino loving the franchise, it just wasn't something we could imagine him doing, especially with his directing career so close to wrapping up. But there are real steps being taken now, and a big one is that Tarantino may have decided on a writer who can make his vision come true.

And of course, that vision will include Star Trek being R-rated. Expect more than the usual allotment of F-bombs from Starfleet if Tarantino's movie gets off the ground. Mark L. Smith (The Revenant) has emerged as frontrunner to write it after a meeting with Tarantino that included writers Lindsey Beer (Chaos Walking) and Drew Pearce (Iron Man 3). It's a little odd that Tarantino isn't writing it himself, but he has work to do on his upcoming Manson era movie. Presumably he'll do a rewrite on anything that gets to him, anyway.

There are a bunch of questions here, but I'll start with this: Will Tarantino's movie be part of the universe established by Abrams or perhaps a standalone? I could see it going either way. Will this count as Tarantino's 10th movie and thus be his final one before retiring? Is he still planning to retire? And finally, what are the chances of Samuel L. Jackson playing the first black Captain Kirk? I put the odds at 50/50 right now.

Quentin Tarantino Has A 'Star Trek' Movie In The Works With J.J. Abrams

This is pretty incredible right here. For some time now Quentin Tarantino has expressed interest in directing a Star Trek movie. Seems kinda out of nowhere, right? But nah, he's always loved genre and Star Trek is at the top of his list of favorites. He said a couple of years ago...

“Some of those episodes are fantastic, and the only thing that limited them was their ‘60s budget and 8-day shooting schedule. And even having said that, they did a magnificent job. You could take some of the great, classic ‘Star Trek’ episodes and just easily expand them to 90 minutes or more. And really do some amazing stuff...The obvious one would be ‘City On The Edge Of Forever,’ that’s what everyone would go to, but there’s a reason why everyone would go to that. It’s one of the classic stories of all time, and one of the great time travel stories. However, in thinking about that concept even further though, I think one of the best ‘Star Trek’ episodes ever written was for ‘Next Generation’… ‘Yesterday’s Enterprise.’ I actually think that is one of the great, not only space story, but the way it dealt with the mythology. That actually could bear a two-hour treatment.”

Well, he may be about to get his chance. Deadline reports Tarantino is in talks to direct a Star Trek movie, having pitched an idea to J.J. Abrams. Abrams has run with it from there, assembling a writers room to make this thing happen. If all goes as planned Tarantino will take the helm himself.

Wow. Imagine if this whole thing comes together! The Star Trek franchise could use a shot in the arm after the underwhelming Star Trek Beyond, and...well, this is one Hell of a shot in the arm. Whatever happens it'll have to wait until Tarantino wraps up his Manson-era movie first, so we may be waiting a while. But this is one of those projects that, on paper, sounds almost too good to be true.

President Obama Reveals His Sci-Fi Favorites And His Inner Nerd

Hey, do you remember this from a few months ago on Star Wars Day?



In case it wasn't obvious by the skinny frame and jug ears, President Obama is a total nerd. The above video is just a little more evidence of it and that he's corrupted Michelle, too. But if you needed a little more proof of his geek cred, Wired has delivered it. They managed to get the current Prez to guest edit the November issue and list all of his favorites in the realm of sci-fi.

His list isn't anything too crazy, either. It's stuff like Star Wars: Episode IV, The Martian, Cosmos, and of course, Star Trek. I think if anything this shows how much of a normal guy he is who likes normal stuff, and that's a big reason why he's the most popular President in history.

New 'Star Trek' Series Heads to CBS' Streaming Service; 'Star Trek 4' Set for 2019

While the Star Wars franchise is just beginning to take off again, its immediate rival in the minds of geeks everywhere, Star Trek, is looking to expand. Following on the heels of two J.J. Abrams-led movies, Justin Lin is directing Star Trek Beyond for release next year. And what about after that? A fourth film is already being eyed and now a new TV series is on the way, but it comes with a slight caveat. 

Alex Kurtzman, a producer and writer on the Star Trek big screen franchise, is developing a new TV project for CBS. Sounds cool, right? Well, just hold on. The first episode of the series, which will feature all-new characters, will debut on the network in January 2017, but then it will be found exclusively on CBS All Access, their paid streaming service. Are you ready to plunk down $5.99 a month for that voyage? The search is on for a writer who can get this thing going at warp speed.

Meanwhile, a fourth Star Trek movie has been set for 2019, although Kurtzman will have nothing to do with that. Obviously it's too early to start talking about plots and talent, but it shows confidence in Star Trek Beyond to keep the franchise going at a high level even without Abrams at the helm. [THR]

The Talent Show: Chris Pine

Chris Pine made his acting debut back in 2004, when he co-starred alongside Anne Hathaway in The Princess Diaries 2: The Royal Engagement. Since then, he's starred in several movies including Bottle Shock with Alan Rickman, the sci-fi thriller Carriers, Unstoppable with Denzel Washington, People Like Us with Elizabeth Banks, and done voice over work for the animation Rise of the Guardians. Though he's probably most famous for his role as Captain James T. Kirk in J.J. Abrams's reboot of Star Trek and its sequel Star Trek Into Darkness. 

A lot of times he plays the charming, if a bit narcissistic and overconfident but very likable characters. But this year, Pine seems to be venturing into different types of film. He just recently starred as the intelligent Tom Clancy analyst in Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit and will also be seen this year in Horrible Bosses 2 and we'll hear him sing in the movie adaptation of the Broadway musical Into the Woods.

'Attack the Block' director Joe Cornish in the mix to helm next 'Star Trek'?

After all of that waiting and secrecy, Star Trek Into Darkness hit theaters and....well, at least the Trekkers turned out for it, I guess. Paramount's probably not doing any backflips over the box office, although it could possibly be saved on the foreign market. But it does make the likelihood of a third film a bit cloudier, especially with J.J. Abrams moving on to helm Star Wars: Episode VII. After serving to the needs of Abrams' schedule on the last film, Paramount isn't going to sit around waiting again, and it looks like a list of names have already begun to emerge as his replacement.

You knew it was coming! The 'Star Wars: Into Darkness' mash-up trailer

If somehow you were living under a hole, or in my case were 30,000 feet in the air when the big news broke, but J.J. Abrams is taking over the most sought after gig in Hollywood by directing Star Wars: Episode VII. Not only that, but he'll stick around to produce the next Star Trek film after Star Trek Into Darkness wraps up. So basically he's in charge of the two most influential and popular science fiction franchises ever. What's next, directing a Dr. Who movie?

So while the 'Trek' vs. 'Wars' debate will take an interesting turn for the next couple of years, it's also opened up the window for what will certainly be a wave of new mash-ups combining the two worlds. The first is out now, and it's basically the Star Trek Into Darkness score and mood backing images from the classic Star Wars. It works, but I'm expecting them to get far more elaborate over time.
