So did Scarlett Johansson put a curse on Ryan Reynolds’
career after their divorce? Because there can be no other explanation for
Reynolds starring in R.I.P.D. After a few years of duds, this is what he chose
to be his comeback movie? It’s the worst movie of 2013 so far, and I shudder to
think what could possibly beat it. (And yes, I’ve seen Grown Ups 2, and
R.I.P.D. is still worse.)

First trailer for 'R.I.P.D.' is 'Hellboy' meets 'Men in Black'
By Travis Hopson4/18/2013Jeff Bridges, mary louise parker, r.i.p.d., robert schwentke, ryan reynolds, trailerView Comments
The buzz on comic book adaptation R.I.P.D. has been so low that it would be more accurate to say the film has no buzz at all. Despite opening right in the thick of the summer season, and two well-liked stars in Ryan Reynolds and Jeff Bridges, there doesn't seem to be a lot in the way of studio support. But that could be about to change as the first trailer has emerged, and it actually looks pretty good.

First poster for 'R.I.P.D.' with Ryan Reynolds and Jeff Bridges
The fortunes of R.I.P.D. seem to have risen and fallen right along with Ryan Reynolds career. He joined the comic book adaptation during a time when he was red hot, with Green Lantern on the way, a Deadpool film in development, not to mention a starring role in Safe House with Denzel Washington. Well...two out of those three films went nowhere fast, and while Safe House did solid business, Reynolds was mostly overshadowed in it.

Jeff Bridges and Ryan Reynolds take aim in 1st look at 'R.I.P.D.'
Marvel and DC don't have a complete monopoly on comic book films this summer. There's also R.I.P.D., the long-developing adaptation of the Dark Horse comic. Ryan Reynolds will attempt to move on past the Green Lantern debacle by pairing up with Jeff Bridges in the paranormal buddy cop film, and the first official still has now arrived.

Sure Shots: R.I.P.D.; Jon Turteltaub; Jason Bateman
By Travis Hopson9/21/2011Jason Bateman, jon turteltaub, movie news, news, Nicolas Cage, r.i.p.d.View Comments
* In case you haven't noticed, Jon Turtletaub LOVES working with Nic Cage. The two are practically joined at the hip. With good reason, as both National Treasure movies and even The Sorcerere's Apprentice proved to be financially successful. So let's hope the director can find a way to fit the far out actor into his next film, Last Vegas. Turtletaub will direct based on a script by Dan Fogelman, probably the hottest writer in town thanks to how his Crazy, Stupid, Love turned out. The story centers on four friends in their 60s uniting for a bachelor party held for the last of them to get married. Dress Cage up in an Elvis suit and we've got pure comedic gold! [Variety]
* Jason Bateman is an actor I admire quite a bit, and even in less than inspiring flicks(The Change-Up, Extract) he's usually a bright spot. Sometime I just wish he'd make better choices. For instance, Bateman has just signed on to two movies which just sound terrible to me. He's joined the rapidly expanding cast of Disconnect, from Murderball director Henry-Alex Rubin. The film centers on a number of people and how they all deal in some way with the evils of the technological age. Bateman will play a father who wants to keep his son free from the dangers of the internet. Ugh. Alexander Skarsgard, Michael Nyqvist, Andrea Riseborough, Frank Grillo, and Colin Ford star.
And then there's The Longest Week, which also stars Olivia Wilde(shocker!!!), in a story about “a man who lives a life of leisure in his parents’ prestigious Manhattan hotel. In the span of one week, he finds himself evicted, disinherited and in love.” Double ugh. Is this a film about the Dan Akroyd character in Trading Places? I'll pass. Audiences might not have responded to it financially, but Bateman was superb in The Switch, and showed how likable he can be when he tones down his hyper-cynical routine just a tad. Here's hoping he gets more roles along those lines in the future. [ThePlaylist]

That guy from Big Trouble in Little China joins the cast of R.I.P.D.
James Hong, who most will recognize from Blade Runner
and as the villainous, age defying sorcerer Lo Pan in Big Trouble in Little China
, is the latest addition to the cast of R.I.P.D. The film centers on the Rest In Peace Department, a supernatural police force of sorts. Ryan Reynolds is a slain cop and new addition to the force, searching for the guy who killed him. Jeff Bridges is his partner and former Old West gunslinger. Mary-Louise Parker is their boss, with Kevin Bacon as the bad guy, and Stephanie Szostak co-starring.
Swimsuit model Marisa Miller just recently signed to play the human avatar of Bridges' character, meaning she'll be what people see when they look at him on the street. Hong will play Grandpa Chen, the avatar of Reynolds' character.

Marisa Miller joins R.I.P.D. as Jeff Bridges' human avatar. Say wha??
By Travis Hopson8/25/2011Jeff Bridges, marisa miller, news, r.i.p.d., robert schwentke, ryan reynoldsView Comments
Mmmm...Marisa Miller. The Victoria's Secret model has chosen the weirdest of roles for her feature film debut, as she'll play the human avatar to Jeff Bridges' character in R.I.P.D. Yep, when people look at Bridges, what they'll see is the former Sports Illustrated swimsuit cover girl. I can live with that.
Directed by Robert Schwentke(Red
), the film is based on a Dark Horse comic about a pair of undead police officers in the Rest In Peace Department. One is an ex-cop played by Ryan Reynolds, who works the beat while looking for the guy who murdered him. Bridges is his partner, an Old West gunslinger. Kevin Bacon is the bad guy, with Stephanie Szostak co-starring, and Mary-Louise Parker as the head of the department.
Yeah, this one's shaking out to be pretty weird. I've known a thing or two about R.I.P.D. and just sortof assumed the "avatar" bit would be dropped to give the stars more screen time, but turns out I was way off.
R.I.P.D. is set to hit theaters on June 28th 2013. [THR]

Mary-Louise Parker joins the cast of R.I.P.D.

It was only back in June we learned that Jodie Foster was being sought for a role in R.I.P.D(Rest In Peace Department)., an adaptation of the Dark Horse graphic novel following a pair of deceased detectives in a supernatural agency. A couple of years ago I would've said her participation wouldn't have made much sense, but with films like The Beaver

Sure Shots: Gangster Squad; R.I.P.D.; John C. McGinley joins I, Alex Cross
By Travis Hopson8/09/2011gangster squad, I alex cross, john c. mcginley, mireille enos, news, r.i.p.d., stephanie szostakView Comments
* Mireille Enos, who only recently bagged her first major movie role as Brad Pitt's wife in World War Z
* Just because Green Lantern sucked ass doesn't mean Ryan Reynolds is done with comic book movies. He'll be starring in R.I.P.D.
* John C. McGinley, probably best recognized for his role as one of the company consultants in Office Space

Sure Shots: Olivia Wilde; Kevin Bacon; Joe Pesci sues the producers of Gotti film
By Travis Hopson7/29/2011Joe pesci, kevin bacon, linda lovelace, news, olivia wilde, r.i.p.d.View Comments
* Olivia Wilde will have two movies coming out in the span of two weeks: Cowboys & Aliens, and The Change-Up. By the end of 2011 she'll likely appear in at least two more, so it's safe to say she's in pretty high demand right now. That gives her the chance to pretty much have the run of any role she wants, and right now what she's considering is the opportunity to play ex-porn star Linda Lovelace in one of two competing biopics. This isn't the one that was going to star Lindsay Lohan(now with Malin Akerman). This pic is from directors Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman(Howl
* Kevin Bacon has entered talks to play the bad guy(yet again!!) in R.I.P.D., the comic book adaptation starring Ryan Reynolds and Jeff Bridges as a pair of undead cops working the supernatural beat. Robert Schwentke(Red
* Did they think he was funny? Like a clown or something? Joe Pesci has filed a lawsuit against the producers of Gotti: In the Shadow of My Father(formerly Gotti: Three Generations), which makes me think he ain't gonna be involved anymore. After signing on to play the role of high ranking mobster Angelo Ruggiero for a fee of $3M, Pesci gained 30lbs for the part. The producers did what they've been doing all along, which is exploit Pesci's presence(remember how they used Lindsay Lohan for awhile?), then cut his salary to $1M and gave him a totally different character to play. Pesci understandably was not pleased. Shooting is set to begin in just a couple of months, so although I could care less about this film I want to see how this whole thing plays out. It appears that John Travolta(as John Gotti) and Al Pacino are still confirmed. For now. [TMZ]

Rumor: Jodie Foster wanted for R.I.P.D.?
By Travis Hopson6/27/2011comic book movies, Jeff Bridges, jodie foster, news, r.i.p.d., robert schwentke, ryan reynoldsView Comments
With Green Lantern recently taking on the mantle of "summer flop", I expect to see a downturn in superhero movies that don't feature name brand characters. That won't signal the end of comic book movies by any stretch, rather I think we'll see even more lesser known books adapted to help fill the void. One such comic that is on the way is R.I.P.D., which has had Ryan Reynolds attached to star pretty much since the beginning. Robert Schwentke(Red
Bloody Disgusting notes a rumor that Universal is interested in bringing Foster in for the role of Procter. Procter is the boss of murdered cop Nick Cruz(Reynolds) and his undead gunslinger partner(Bridges) as part of the R.I.P.D., walking the supernatural beat while trying to find the identity of his killer.
Foster would add some much needed celebrity muscle to the film, and I wouldn't be surprised if this was isn't a reaction to Reynolds inability to break the bank with Green Lantern. The problem may be scheduling. Foster is set to start production on Neill Blomkamp's District 9

Sure Shots: Jeff Bridges; The Dark Knight Rises rumors; Jose Padilha
By Travis Hopson5/26/2011Jeff Bridges, jose padilha, matthew modine, news, r.i.p.d., ryan reynolds, the dark knight risesView Comments
* After being rumored to be replacing Zach Galifianakis opposite Ryan Reynolds in R.I.P.D., The Wrap is now confirming that Jeff Bridges has signed on to the comic book adaptation. The story sees him and Reynolds as a pair of undead cops walking the supernatural beat. Robert Schwentke(Red
) directs, with a planned start date around summertime. Bridges' character is an Old West gunfighter, so he gets to keep his gruff Rooster Cogburn growl for a few months longer.
* Rumor time. Last week Matthew Modine joined Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises as an unknown character named "Nixon". Nothing else was revealed about him, but Showbiz 411 is now referring to him as a "politician and key villain" in the film. I suspected he'd be a bad guy in some way, but a minor one at best. This seems to say otherwise. Is it possible Nixon is a member of Ra's Al Ghul's League of Assassins?

Sure Shots: Jeremy Renner; Jack Ryan; Jeff Bridges
By Travis Hopson4/29/2011Chris Pine, david koepp, jack bender, jack ryan, Jeff Bridges, Jeremy Renner, news, r.i.p.d., robert schwentke, ryan reynolds, Steve McQueen, tom clancy, zach galifianakisView Comments
* I don't know how Jeremy Renner does it. He must have life model decoys of himself or something, but the guy is seriously pushing Ryan Reynolds for the title of Busiest Actor on Earth. Not only does he have Mission Impossible coming up, but The Bourne Legacy, The Avengers, Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters, Ice Age..it's ridiculous. Is that slowing him down? No, in fact he's looking to make himself even busier by starting his own production company. The first film to come out of it will of course star Renner himself, and will be a biopic on the life of kick ass action hero Steve McQueen. James Grey(Two Lovers
* I'm starting to think we'll never see another Jack Ryan movie at this rate. It's been something like two years since Chris Pine was selected to play the iconic Tom Clancy agent, who in the past has been portrayed by Harrison Ford, Alec Baldwin, and Ben Affleck. But a multitude of script issues have hamstrung the whole deal, even with Lost director Jack Bender waiting patiently to get started. At one point the film was titled Moscow, but Deadline reports that it's now untitled, and yet another rewrite is full effect. This time Paramount's pulling all the stops, bringing in heavy-hitting screenwriter David Koepp(Spider-Man
* Scheduling issues forced Zach Galifianakis to drop out of R.I.P.D., one of a billion projects that has Ryan Reynolds as it's lead. Based on the Dark Horse comic, it would follow a pair of undead cops who work the paranormal beat. With Galifianakis out, Deadline is reporting that Jeff Bridges is in talks to play the other male lead, a gunslinger from the Old West. Hmmm..I don't think that'd be much of a stretch for ol' Rooster Cogburn. Scheduling remains an issue, as Reynolds has a lot on his plate(specifically Green Lantern sequels) which could push the film back. Robert Schewentke(Red
