Sure Shots: Jeff Bridges; The Dark Knight Rises rumors; Jose Padilha

* After being rumored to be replacing Zach Galifianakis opposite Ryan Reynolds in R.I.P.D., The Wrap is now confirming that Jeff Bridges has signed on to the comic book adaptation. The story sees him and Reynolds as a pair of undead cops walking the supernatural beat. Robert Schwentke(Red) directs, with a planned start date around summertime. Bridges' character is an Old West gunfighter, so he gets to keep his gruff Rooster Cogburn growl for a few months longer.

* Rumor time. Last week Matthew Modine joined Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises as an unknown character named "Nixon". Nothing else was revealed about him, but Showbiz 411 is now referring to him as a "politician and key villain" in the film. I suspected he'd be a bad guy in some way, but a minor one at best. This seems to say otherwise. Is it possible Nixon is a member of Ra's Al Ghul's League of Assassins?

* Brazilian filmmaker Jose Padilha(Elite Squad) has seen his name attached to a lot of high profile flicks lately. He's set to jumpstart the Robocop franchise soon, and yesterday was revealed to be in contention to direct The Wolverine. But now he's taken on a project that has much loftier ambitions than robotic vigilantes and clawed mutants. THR reports that he'll be helming Tri-Border, a political thriller set in the South American zone bordering Argentina, Paraguay, and Brazil. The story follows a Boston DEA agent who makes the mistake of busting the son of a US Senator and sent to Paraguay as punishment. Nick Schenck(Gran Torino) is penning the script with plans to have it done by August.
