Behind-the-Scenes 'Avatar' Sequels Set Photo Reveals The Sea Dragon Mothership

The Avatar sequels are coming...in two years. A decade since James Cameron's record-breaking sci-fi film and years of delays on the subsequent films have brought us to his: the completion of live-action production for the year. Whoo whoo? Yeah, there's still a crap ton of work that needs to be done before we see just the first piece of footage, a photo, anything that will ever wind up on the big screen. But at least we have a new set photo, I guess.

As the caption from Avatar's official Twitter reads: "Check out this photo of the aft well deck section of the Sea Dragon, a massive mothership that carries an array of other sea-going craft in the sequels."
So this is far from an ordinary set on some backlot in the middle of nowhere. There are two vehicles I can see, one in the back and one submersible-looking one in the front, which are both inside of a much larger ship. I see some members of the crew in breathing masks, so either they're on Pandora where humans can't breathe the air, or they're going underwater. It may be the latter since we know the majority of the first sequel will take place in an aquatic environment, perfect for that deep sea-diving fool James Cameron.

This looks like it cost an astronomical amount, which it probably did. Cameron has never been one to tighten the purse strings, and certainly isn't on his pet franchise. Four sequels are planned but will largely depend on the success of the first two. I have doubts they'll come close to reaching the $2.7B heights of the original. Too much time has passed and history hasn't looked back at Avatar as fondly as I think Cameron does. Then again, after all this time he could be building up a tremendous amount of anticipation.

Starring Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Joel David Moore, Dileep Rao, Stephen Lang, Sigourney Weaver, and Matt Gerald with new additions Kate Winslet, Edie Falco, Michelle Yeoh, Vin Diesel, Jemaine Clement, and Oona Chaplin, Avatar 2 arrives on December 17th 2021, followed by Avatar 3 on December 22nd 2023. Sequels arriving in 2025 and 2027 may follow.

'The Tomorrow War' First Look: Chris Pratt Leads A Team Of Time-Traveling Soldiers

Chris Pratt isn't hurting for new franchises or anything, but earlier this year he signed on for what could be a new one in Ghost Draft. The live-action sci-fi film will be directed by Chris McKay, director of The Lego Batman Movie, and features a very cool Edge of Tomorrow-esque premise involving an alien invasion. While I really dug that title, it now has a new one, The Tomorrow War, with a first look at Pratt alongside his battle-hardened cast.

Production is underway on The Tomorrow War, and Pratt has dropped the first image of him looking like he's ready to take on any extraterrestrial threat. The story finds humanity making a last ditch effort to save themselves from alien invasion by reaching back into the past and enlisting soldiers from different eras to fight the war. Pratt plays a man who is drafted to fight in a future war where humanity's fate depends on him confronting his past.

Pretty cool, right? You can get warriors from different eras with different personalities, styles, weaponry, etc. I love it.

Pratt is joined in the star-studded ensemble by J.K. Simmons, Betty Gilpin (GLOW), Yvonne Strahovski (Chuck), Sam Richardson (Good Boys), Mary Lyn Rajskub (24) Theo Von, Jasmine Matthews, Keith Powers, Edwin Hodge, Mike Mitchell, Seychelle Gabriel, Alan Strong, Alexis Louder and Chibuikem Uche.

The script is by Deadfall writer Zach Dean with Pratt as a first-time exec-producer. You can read his excitement about that in the image's caption.

Jared Leto Looks Vampiric In 'Morbius' Set Photo, Jared Harris And Tyrese Gibson Join Cast

Sony's Spidey-verse is on a roll with the $800M-grossing Venom and the Oscar-winning Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse under their belt. Now all eyes have turned to the next film, Morbius, which stars Jared Leto as the vampiric antihero.  Turns out, production has been going on for a week, and we know that because Jared Leto dropped this behind-the-scenes glimpse which features nothing but his hair and saggy eyes...


Always so sleepy-eyed. And pale. He already looks like a vampire, not sure they had to hire a makeup team for this one.


Anyway, the cast surrounding Leto has grown to include yet another big screen Jared, this time Mad Men and The Crown's Jared Harris. The British actor's role is being kept under wraps, which isn't surprising. He's particularly good at playing villains with a stuffy elitist attitude, as he did in Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. However he's expected to play an unidentified mentor of Morbius, who gains vampire-like abilities and a thirst for blood after conducting experiments involving vampire bats.


Also possibly coming aboard is Fast & Furious troublemaker, Tyrese Gibson, who has entered talks to play an FBI agent on Morbius' trail. It's the last major piece of casting left to be filled, as Adria Arjona is set to play Morbius' fiancé Martine Bancroft, and Matt Smith is villain Loxias Crown.

Morbius is directed by Daniel Espinosa and opens on July 31st 2020. [THR]

'The Predator' Alternate Ending Included A Crazy Tease For Ellen Ripley's Return

There's a surprising amount of love for the Alien vs. Predator franchise, and I think for a lot of people the hope was that Shane Black's The Predator could help lead to a revival of that cinematic rivalry. But the film was a little underwhelming at the box office, and who knows when we'll see the Predator return to hunt again, this despite a conclusion that teased an absolutely insane sequel. And yet, if one of the alternate endings had been used not only would it have been even more bonkers, but those hoping for another epic Alien crossover would've gotten their wish.

A set photo revealed on Instagram by artist Yuri Everson shows an image from one of the film's many alternate endings. While we always knew this was the case, what wasn't known is that one of them would've set up the return of Ellen Ripley, the iconic character played by Sigourney Weaver.

“We shot three different endings for The Predator, all variations of a “Predator Killer.” This unused ending was Predator Killer Ripley wearing the breather mask we created for the film. You can see her name tag there on her costume.”

That would've been fucking nuts! And made not one damn lick of sense.  Okay, a bit of a SPOILER here for those who haven't seen The Predator. The film basically ends with the humans defeating the powerful hybrid Predator, and coming away with a special cargo left behind by the runaway Predator that started everything.  When they opened it, a weird armor suit latched on to a nearby lab tech, transforming him into a "Predator killer", and setting up a movie in which the humans are equipped to take the fight to the Predators once and for all.

I don't know how they expected the Ripley thing to work. First of all, she wasn't being played by Weaver, but by stunt double Breanna Watkins, so chances are we never would've seen her face, just that nametag which clearly identifies her as Ripley. And last I checked, Alien takes place way in the future, while The Predator is in the present. Was she sent through a wormhole back in time? I don't know, and honestly, I don't want to know. The Alien universe is messed up enough without adding time travel into the mix.  And what? Were they hoping to have Sigourney Weaver come back in a sequel? Granted, she probably would've done it, but that's a big gamble.

Tom Hanks Rocks The Red Cardigan In First Look At The Mister Rogers Biopic

If you're too young to know who Fred Rogers is or his show Mister Rogers' Neighborhood, well, I hate you. The rest of us who do are loving this moment right now, as Mister Rogers is a part of the public discourse in a way he hasn't been since passing away fifteen years ago. Earlier this year we had the terrific documentary Won't You Be My Neighbor?, which looks like a potential Oscar contender. And there's also a biopic starring another beloved American figure, Tom Hanks, and we have our first look at him in a very specific outfit.

Sony's first image of the untitled film (formerly referred to as You Are My Friend) features Hanks in the classic Fred Rogers red cardigan and slacks. The casting couldn't be more perfect, and this photo only confirms it.

The film is directed by Marielle Heller (Diary of a Teenage Girl) and co-stars Matthew Rhys as a journalist who overcomes his cynicism to form an unlikely friendship with Rogers. Chris Cooper and Susan Kelechi Watson co-star. The film hits theaters next year on October 18th.

First Look At Joaquin Phoenix In Full 'Joker' Makeup

There's something about the Joker that inspires extreme reactions in fans. While I appreciate Heath Ledger's performance in The Dark Knight, can we stop talking about it like it was the greatest thing ever? And on the flip side, Jared Leto's gangsta take on the Clown Prince in Suicide Squad doesn't deserve nearly so much hate. Now, I think we're going to get another very divisive response, this time to Joaquin Phoenix in Todd Phillips' Joker.

After teasing us with a boring first image some days back, we now have the first look at Phoenix in full Joker makeup. And it's...well, kinda plain? Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't want to run into this clown in a dark alley but his appearance is far from shocking and not really comics accurate. That said, I should probably consider this is an origin story, and perhaps Arthur (as the character will be named as a civilian) hasn't perfected his look yet. The only thing that really matters is Phoenix's performance, and already I can tell this is going to be creepy as f**k.  It's just a "camera test" but probably indicative of how Phoenix is going to look in the final version.

Leonardo DiCaprio And Brad Pitt Got That Swagger In First Look At 'Once Upon A Time In Hollywood'

You know how I feel about set photos, but this is Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon A Time In Hollywood. And it's official, not a snap from some jabronie on the street corner. Plus, it's Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt radiating some serious '70s swagger. Look at them, there isn't a nightclub that could hold these two...

If only they had found a way to get Margot Robbie in there, too, but her role as Sharon Tate is likely to be much smaller. This is DiCaprio and Pitt's show, playing Western TV stars navigating the movie business during the time of the Manson Family murders. 

Hopefully we get similar shots of Robbie and the supporting cast of Burt Reynolds, Al Pacino, Timothy Olyphant, James Marsden, Michael Madsen, Tim Roth, Scoot McNairy, Damian Lewis, Luke Perry, Emile Hirsch, Dakota Fanning, and Clifton Collins Jr. Once Upon A Time In Hollywood opens August 9th 2019.

Tom Cruise Is Ready To Fly As 'Top Gun 2' Filming Begins

Tom Cruise is feeling the need...the need for speed. We haven't heard much about a Top Gun sequel since Cruise set his Oblivion director Joseph Kosinski to helm the project, but clearly work has been taking place behind the scenes. Cruise has dropped a new photo heralding the start of production on Top Gun: Maverick, and it looks like the flight suit still fits. Dude's still got it.

Originally it was to be Tony Scott  returning to helm the picture before his death in 2012. Cruise kept pushing forward, however, and has done a pretty good job of keeping plot details under wraps. He'll reprise his role as Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, and previous statements have teased the impact of drone warfare on old ace fighter pilots like him. We don't know much else, other than Cruise's intention to maintain the tone of Top Gun, which should mean plenty of high-flying action.  Despite Val Kilmer's confusing comments from a few years ago we don't know anybody in the supporting cast. I'm guessing Kelly McGillis is out.

Top Gun 2 is slated to take off on July 13th 2019.

First Look At Brie Larson As Captain Marvel Is A Little Surprising

We've been waiting a long time to see Brie Larson in her Captain Marvel getup. The Oscar-winning actress landed the role back in 2016, and while there have been details dropped here and there we've yet to see her as the first female hero to have her own solo movie.  Well, that's now changed thanks to set photos snagged by Page Six.


Green?  Yeah, the costume is green, which goes against type for the character and different from the concept art we've seen. Now, this probably isn't, and shouldn't be, a very big deal. I don't think there's any real obligation to her color scheme, is there? Carol Danvers has sported red and blue, or black when she was Warbird...basically she's had a ton of outfits. Maybe the colors represent the alien Kree, who play a major part in her origin? It could be anything. Maybe she's secretly a member of the Green Lantern Corps?

The scene Larson is shooting is likely for the still-untitled Avengers 4 and not for Captain Marvel which films in March and opens in May 2019. Remember, Captain Marvel is a prequel set in the '90s, so I think when that film arrives she will be wearing a costume we are more familiar with.

Watch Star Wars Celebration's Touching Tribute To Carrie Fisher

True to its name, Star Wars Celebration is a cause for fans of a galaxy far far away to revel in their love of the sci-fi franchise. But this year it's going to be a bittersweet experience because it just doesn't feel right without Carrie Fisher around. And that couldn't have been more evident than at the "40 Years of Star Wars" panel that kicked off the 4-day event. While we saw everyone from George Lucas to Mark Hamill to Billy Dee Williams to Harrison Ford, not having Fisher there was a void that couldn't be filled.

At the event of the panel, a 5-minute tribute to Fisher aired, and it's a wonderful look at her history with Star Wars, the lasting friendships that she made, and the personality that made fans and everyone she worked with fall in love with her. Yeah, it'll probably bring you to tears the way it did me, but they're happy tears for all the great memories she left us with.  Also, the above image is our first shot of Fisher as General Leia Organa in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, seen on set with director Rian Johnson.

Rinko Kikuchi And Charlie Day Are Back For 'Pacific Rim: Uprising', Joined By Karl Urban

While it's great news that a Pacific Rim sequel is happening at all after looking kinda bleak for a minute, not having the original cast return was very disappointing. Or at least that's how it has appeared. No, Charlie Hunnam definitely isn't coming back, but it does appear that Rinko Kikuchi is back in the fold as Mako Mori, and that's all that matters to me. Oh, and everybody's two dorky scientists have been confirmed to return, as well, along with a brand new addition with plenty of franchise experience.

Pacific Rim: Uprising cinematographer Dan Mindel dropped an image on his Instagram that features some of the film's cast and their characters. Among them are Kikuchi, Charlie Day and Burn Gorman as Newt and Gotlieb, plus Star Trek's Karl Urban as a character named Quan. They join the previously confirmed John Boyega, Cailee Spaeny, Scott Eastwood, Jing Tian, and Adria Arjona. Day and Gorman had been rumored to return a couple of years ago but this is the first confirmation. They were a big chunk of the comic relief so to not have them would have been a huge loss.

No details on Urban's character are available, but he seems like the type to play another tough as nails commander like Idris Elba did in the first movie. If only he could be Judge Dredd. >sigh<

First 'Thor: Ragnarok' Image And Synopsis Reveal A Superhero Showdown

Hopefully you haven't grown tired of all the hero vs. hero action you saw in 2016 because it ain't over yet. Marvel's Planet Hulk-inspired sequel Thor: Ragnarok has just dropped its first official image, featuring Chris Hemsworth and director Taika Waititi. Does that really count? Everyone else seems to think so. Anyway, we're also getting a first look at the official synopsis, and it teases a rematch between Thor and the jade Avenger, Mark Ruffalo's Hulk.

"In Marvel Studios' Thor: Ragnarok, Thor is imprisoned on the other side of the universe without his mighty hammer and finds himself in a race against time to get back to Asgard to stop Ragnarok--the destruction of his homeworld and the end of Asgardian civilization--at the hands of an all-powerful new threat, the ruthless Hela. But first he must survive a deadly gladiatorial contest that pits him against his former ally and fellow Avenger--the Incredible Hulk!"

We learned a few weeks ago that Sakaar, the battle planet seen in the comic, would also be in the movie. Makes sense, and so does the presence of Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange considering his solo movie's post-credits sequence. The rest of the cast features the return of Tom Hiddleston as Loki, and it will be very interesting to see how he fits in; Cate Blanchett as Hela, Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie, Anthony Hopkins as Odin, Idris Elba as Heimdall, Karl Urban as Skurge, and Jeff Goldblum as the Grandmaster. Thor: Ragnarok opens November 3rd.

First Look At Hugh Jackman In 'Logan' Reveals An Old, Scarred Wolverine

Day after day the Logan social media campaign has churned out a new photo from Hugh Jackman's final turn as Wolverine. We've seen images of Stephen Merchant as the mutant Caliban, Boyd Holbrook as Donald Pierce, and another member of the cyborg Reavers. But we hadn't seen Jackman until now, and it's as good as confirmation as any that he is indeed Old Man Logan.


Director James Mangold revealed a photo of a haggard, scarred Jackman in the role of an aged Wolverine. It's proof that Wolverine's healing factor is either gone or severely diminished because that scar on his face wouldn't be there at all. And with no healing factor you can expect all of his worst enemies to show up in hopes of finishing him off, which is why I have a hard time believing Sabretooth won't be in the movie. Sure, Mister Sinister will be there, possibly played by Richard E. Grant, and so will the nefarious Weapon X organization but Sabretooth will always be Wolverine's greatest nemesis.

Logan hits theaters on March 3rd 2017.

Boyd Holbrook Will Crucify 'Logan' As This Classic X-Men Villain

We've known for a few weeks now that Mister Sinister would be one of villain of the third Wolverine film, simply-titled Logan. But long before that there were rumors of the cyborg killers known as the Reavers also playing a role, and with multiple castings for bad guys following that it seemed more likely the team would be involved. And now today the film's hyper-active Instagram account has dropped one more image, confirming Boyd Holbrook's role as Donald Pierce, the cyborg leader of the Reavers.

The Reavers are an important crew in the X-Men's history. Pierce was the White Bishop of the notorious cabal known as the Hellfire Club, which was seen in X-Men: First Class. He leads a team of fellow cyborgs known as the Reavers, who at one point crucified Wolverine in arguably the hero's most iconic visual moment...


I expect if you're going to use the Reavers then this scene will have to be depicted in some way.  Am I wrong in hoping the introduction of cyborgs will also give us the debut of friendly androids Albert and Elsie-Dee? Could she be who this little girl seen in recent set photos is playing?

So now that Holbrook's casting is out of the way it's more likely than ever that Richard E. Grant will be Sinister. Don't be surprised if we get another photo confirming that tomorrow.

A Sinister Figure Lurks In The Latest 'Logan' Image

The Logan Instagram account isn't stopping with the mysterious teases. We've seen sliced up arms, run-down facilities, and now a shadowy figure lurking around the New Mexico set.

Could this figure, seen in the reflection in a puddle of water outside a motel, be whoever is playing Mister Sinister? He does seem to be sporting a hat, which isn't Wolverine's style and isn't necessarily favored by Sinister...except when he's in human form as Nathaniel Essex.

This could all be nothing. I mean, that guy could be like a grip or assistant director who just happened to walk by at just the right time. I doubt it, but you never know. Maybe it's Hugh Jackman trying to sneak inside the motel without attracting attention.

New 'Logan' Image Teases A Forbidden Zone

The Wolverine's marketing campaign was one of the most prolific I've ever seen. Every day it seemed there was something new; an image, a teaser, an entire cache of hand-drawn art pieces. It was crazy. I have a feeling the third (and final?) film, Logan, is going to be the same.

The film's Instagram account has revealed yet another black & white photo, showing a mysterious, and very dangerous-looking location warning passersby away in Spanish: "It's forbidden by law to trespass or loiter in this area."

Who would want to go to a place that looks like that, anyway? Chances are nobody is there of their own free will, and it could turn out to be the Weapon X facility where so much of Wolverine's past trauma began. It may also be where villain Mister Sinister is holed up, conducting whatever nasty experiments on mutants he's devised this time.

Directed by James Mangold and starring Hugh Jackman as Wolverine for the final time, Logan opens March 3rd 2017. You can check out the other photos from the film here.

'Blade Runner' Sequel Officially Titled 'Blade Runner 2049'

Production may be underway on Denis Villeneuve's secretive Blade Runner sequel, but details remain extremely scarce. In fact, before today we didn't even know what the movie's title would be. But now that's changed, and the title is certainly appropriate.

The film is officially titled Blade Runner 2049, which makes sense considering that will be the year it takes place. That places it 30 years after the events of Ridley Scott's 1982 sci-fi classic.



As you can see from the above image, Ryan Gosling will be heading up the sequel with Harrison Ford back in the role of Rick Deckard. Robin Wright, Jared Leto, Robin Wright, Dave Bautista, Ana de Armas, Sylvia Hoeks, Carla Juri, Mackenzie Davis and Barkhad Abdi will co-star. Will they be playing humans or replicants, though?

Blade Runner 2049 opens October 6th 2017.

Zack Snyder In Bat-Gauntlets Teases Deathstroke In 'Justice League'

Set photos are boring as shit if you ask me, which is why I rarely post them. Want to know what's worse? A photo of a director staring at his tablet. However in this case there's a tiny reason to be interested because that director is Zack Snyder, he's wearing some kind of Bat-gauntlet, and because on that tablet is Deathstroke from Justice League.

Snyder dropped the image himself, causing everyone to scurry so they could see what those storyboards are he's looking at. What's clear is that they feature the assassin Deathstroke, who we learned will be played by Joe Manganiello. And he's definitely talking to someone who appears to be bald. Some are already using this as confirmation it's Jesse Eisenberg back as Lex Luthor, but these are rough sketches and details about that character may not have been drawn in yet. So it could be anybody...except for King Shark. I can say with 100% certainty that it isn't King Shark.

Here's Nick Jonas Opposite Dwayne Johnson In The 'Jumanji' Sequel

There's a reason why Dwayne Johnson has the millions AND MILLIONS(!!!) of fans flocking to his social media pages. It's because, like his buddy Vin Diesel, he always keeps his followers in the loop on everything he's doing. Recently he dropped the first image from the Jumanji set, featuring him alongside Kevin Hart, Jack Black, and Karen Gillan. But there was one star who was left out of that surprisingly controversial image (Dude, it's Jumanji. Chill.), and it was Nick Jonas. Well that has now been rectified.

Here's the first look at the singer/actor on the Hawaii set, looking more like a downed pilot than somebody who planned for a jungle excursion.



Under normal circumstances that might be considered Jonas looking kinda rugged, but next to Johnson he looks like a pop star playing the part. We don't know much of anything about his character, but we do know the adults will be playing the game avatars of co-stars  Alex Wolff, Ser’Darius Blain, Madison Iseman, and Morgan Turner. Jonas is still pretty young himself so it's unclear if his character will also be some kind of archetype.

Jonas can be seen in theaters right now in the college hazing drama, Goat.  Jumanji opens next year on July 28th.

Check Out JK Simmons As Commissioner Gordon In 'Justice League'

Zack Snyder is the ultimate fanboy director, and he never goes too long without teasing his upcoming films to an eager public. A couple of days ago was Batman Day (a totally bullshit holiday made up by Bat-geeks), and Snyder took the opportunity to reveal this first look image from Justice League, featuring a certain familiar Bat-Signal manned by J.K. Simmons as Commissioner Jim Gordon.



We've seen plenty of how Simmons got all jacked up for the role as Gotham's top cop, but this is the first time we've officially seen him in character.  Presumably Batman will come zip-lining onto that roof at some point. Or just emerge out of the shadows behind him. If Snyder really wants to be cool it'll be Bat-Mite that shows up. That'll throw everybody off. Simmons has already wrapped on all of his scenes, which he says primarily involve Ben Affleck's Batman, which makes sense.
