Review: 'Black And Blue', Naomie Harris Leads Suspenseful But Forgettable Police Thriller

Naomie Harris probably deserves a better movie than Black and Blue, a timely but fundamentally generic cop thriller straight out of the David Ayer playbook. She's certainly earned it, with stellar performances in blockbuster films such as Pirates of the Caribbean and Skyfall, to her Oscar-nominated dramatic role in Moonlight. Harris has the goods to deliver on a potentially weighty, racially-charged premise, but the movie she's given turns out to be just another cop-on-the-run flick.

Black and Blue stars Harris as rookie officer Alicia West, who has returned home to New Orleans' Ninth Ward to find it overrun by drugs, violence, and a police force that couldn't really give a shit about the people they are to serve and protect. The film begins promisingly enough. Alicia goes on her morning jog through one of the better neighborhoods, only to be pulled over and rough up by a couple of white cops demanding to know why she's there. When they figure out she's one of them, the closest thing to an apology is a dismissive "You know how it is."

Peter Dowling's script teases an exploration of the conflict faced by black cops, torn between loyalty to their people and their brothers in blue. But also as a black woman on a police force that appears to be nothing but men, Alicia is in an especially tenuous position. There's a lot of potential in that story, one that has been explored frequently in films stretching as far back as The Glass Shield and as recently as Monsters and Men. That's not the story screenwriter Peter Dowling tells, though.

What we do get is a suspenseful but ultimately forgettable cop movie, which finds Alicia on the run after capturing a police-involved homicide on her body cam.  Alicia finds her inner struggle taken to deadly new levels as she is hunted by both the corrupt officers who have framed her for the crime, and the black residents who see her as just another cop who can't be trusted. With help from Mouse (Tyrese Gibson), a former friend and local storeowner, Alicia must survive long enough to get the cam footage back to the precinct to clear her name and expose the real killers.

Harris is powerful and sympathetic, matched in sheer force by Frank Grillo as the dirtiest cop on Alicia's  trail. They lend weight to the material when there is none. Mike Colter, sporting a mouth grill and evil sneer that'll make you forget Luke Cage real quick, is a scarily dominating presence when he needs to be. Gibson's out of place, though. I know his role is underplayed so as not to take away from Harris, but he's not the right actor for that kind of role.

Directed by Deon Taylor, who had the campy home invasion film The Intruder just a few months ago, Black and Blue says little about life in New Orleans post-Katrina, other than it's apparently swarming with stereotypical gangbangers and drug dealers. There's plenty of kinetic action, however, shot appropriately enough by legendary Heat cinematographer Dante Spinotti. He knows a thing or two about capturing shootouts between the cops and bad guys. It's enough to keep Black and Blue entertaining, but certainly not substantive in the arresting way it could have been.

'Black And Blue' Trailer: Naomie Harris Is A Good Cop On The Run

David Ayer doesn't have a monopoly on corrupt cop movies, but it's hard for me to not see his influence in a movie like Black & Blue.  Directed by Deon Taylor (The Intruder), the film centers on a rookie female cop who captures video of her colleagues covering up a murder. That sends her on the run and in desperate need of help when she becomes the target of a manhunt led by her brothers-in-blue.

The film stars Naomie Harris as the rookie officer, with Tyrese Gibson as a member of the community who offers his support. That she is an African-American at a time when police brutality against blacks has become an epidemic, also weighs into the story penned by writer Peter Dowling (Flightplan). I mentioned Ayer in that you can see some resemblance to films such as Training Day and Dark Blue, both of which he wrote, but the racial component is what should separate Black and Blue from the rest.

SYNOPSIS: BLACK AND BLUE is a fast-paced action thriller about a rookie cop (Naomie Harris) who inadvertently captures the murder of a young drug dealer on her body cam. After realizing that the murder was committed by corrupt cops, she teams up with the one person from her community who is willing to help her (Tyrese Gibson) as she tries to escape both the criminals out for revenge and the police who are desperate to destroy the incriminating footage.

Also starring Frank Grillo, Reid Scott, Mike Colter, Nafessa Williams, and James Moses Black, Black and Blue opens October 25th.

'Black And Blue' Trailer: Naomie Harris Fights To Expose Corrupt Cops

Dirty cops. What would Hollywood crime movies do without them? In Black and Blue, the latest film from prolific director Deon Taylor, Spectre star Naomie Harris tries to expose them without getting herself killed.

Set in Detroit, this is yet another story dealing with police violence and corruption, with Harris playing rookie officer Alicia West. When her body cam captures a group of dirty cops murdering a drug dealer, Alicia must stay alive long enough to reveal the evidence.

Harris is joined in the cast by Fast & Furious star Tyrese Gibson as the one person in the neighborhood who will help her. Frank Grillo, Mike Colter, Beau Knapp, Scott Reid, and Nafessa Williams co-star.

Taylor may have undergone a cloning procedure to get so much work done. This year he already directed the Dennis Quaid thriller The Intruder, and has the Hilary Swank film Fatale coming up, too.

Black and Blue hits theaters on October 25th.

Jared Leto Looks Vampiric In 'Morbius' Set Photo, Jared Harris And Tyrese Gibson Join Cast

Sony's Spidey-verse is on a roll with the $800M-grossing Venom and the Oscar-winning Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse under their belt. Now all eyes have turned to the next film, Morbius, which stars Jared Leto as the vampiric antihero.  Turns out, production has been going on for a week, and we know that because Jared Leto dropped this behind-the-scenes glimpse which features nothing but his hair and saggy eyes...

Always so sleepy-eyed. And pale. He already looks like a vampire, not sure they had to hire a makeup team for this one.

Anyway, the cast surrounding Leto has grown to include yet another big screen Jared, this time Mad Men and The Crown's Jared Harris. The British actor's role is being kept under wraps, which isn't surprising. He's particularly good at playing villains with a stuffy elitist attitude, as he did in Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. However he's expected to play an unidentified mentor of Morbius, who gains vampire-like abilities and a thirst for blood after conducting experiments involving vampire bats.

Also possibly coming aboard is Fast & Furious troublemaker, Tyrese Gibson, who has entered talks to play an FBI agent on Morbius' trail. It's the last major piece of casting left to be filled, as Adria Arjona is set to play Morbius' fiancé Martine Bancroft, and Matt Smith is villain Loxias Crown.

Morbius is directed by Daniel Espinosa and opens on July 31st 2020. [THR]

Tyrese Gibson Stupidly Vows Not To Do 'Fast 9' If The Rock Is In It

Welcome to your morning dose of bullshit. So the tension has been through the roof within the Fast & Furious family for a couple of months, stretching back to The Fate of the Furious when Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson couldn't shoot scenes together. While that beef is apparently squashed now or something, Tyrese Gibson remains adamant that Johnson has ruined everything. How? By agreeing to do a spinoff movie with Jason Statham. It's dumb, yes, but not nearly as dumb as Tyrese putting out an "It's me or Dwayne Johnson" ultimatum that he won't do Fast 9 if The Rock is in it.

Yeah, that's a mistake. Whatcha gonna do, pray for that Green Lantern role you're NEVER gonna get? I know, maybe somebody will make a Luke Cage movie and they'll want you to star? Oh wait, been down that road already. Tyrese did all this the way he normally, over social media, calling Johnson a "candyass" (a reference to the initial Johnson/Diesel beef) on multiple occasions. Seriously, this is the dumbest, career-jeopardizing move I've ever seen from someone who is lucky as shit to be in arguably the most popular franchise in the world.  I mean, do you think ANYBODY was clamoring for 2 Fast 2 Furious' Roman Pearce to be brought back?

Father God I see you and I finally get it............... Life is confusing at times when you’re moving along and your “role” or “purpose” isn’t revealed to you.......... Proudly I’m a Capricorn born Dec 30th 1978 Dr King was taken away from us April 4th 1968 and when I found out Dr King WALKED the streets of WATTS during the WATTS RIOTS it changed my life forever!!!!!! And FYI I was never mad at The Rock - I was just mad that he was “pitched” an idea privately and said yes to it without thinking of what I’m dealing with personally I’m almost broke paying legal fees and is doing what we committed to doing for the #FastFans and #FastFamily cause the fast is tradition it’s not just another Movie Fast was created to COUNTER images of racism to counter that WE ARE NOT ONE RACE...... So the rock how does it feel bro?.... going home to your daughter every night.... it’s was 60 days before I seen my baby..... and all I asked you to do “privately” was NOT accept a role that would deeply effect us all....... You are simply NOT the people’s champ..... you are a selfish champ..... I’m almost broke swimming in legal fees CAA tried but couldn’t book me anything cause my ex wife killed my reputation so no one wants to hire me.. It’s not about I know I know I know right?? Says the man on the Forbes list.. Make sure you kiss your 2 daughters when you get home I wish I could but I can’t afford to fight for my baby anymore so they’re likely going to take her away....... There's a moment in there when Tyrese lets his guard down and gets real about his own personal situation, paying legal fees and child support. As tough as that might be for him what does any of it have to do with Johnson? Tyrese knows that Vin Diesel left the franchise for a while too, right? If Tyrese thinks his situation will improve by leaving then he should by all means do it, but stop bitching already.

Vin Diesel Weighs In On 'Fast & Furious' Feud, Says "Exciting News" To Come

This has been a turbulent week for the Fast & Furious franchise, despite their being some pretty good news mixed in there. It began when Fast 9 was delayed a year to April 10th 2020, in order to make room for Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham's spinoff, arriving in July 2019.  Not everybody was happy about it, though, and Tyrese Gibson, who has played the mouthy Roman Pearce since 2 Fast 2 Furious, has been vocal on social media about his displeasure.

We haven't heard from Papa Bear, though, until now. Vin Diesel hit Instagram and voiced his opinion, and as expected, he takes a more positive, even philosophical approach to it...

Brotherhood... and all it's complexities. This scene was filmed in Puerto Rico, I can remember it like it was yesterday. Such a beautiful island, the people were so warm and welcoming. I turned 43 that summer... and my son Vincent was born. A woman named Jan Kelly responded to a question I had asked on Facebook, 'who they would like to see me work with?' She said would love to see me work with Dwayne... I listened to her request and he became Hobbs. I know there has been a lot of speculation as to why the Fast 9 release date was pushed... but it would be unfair to say it is anyone's fault. As we plot the course to expand the Fast & Furious universe, one must be mindful to take stock of the roads we took to get here. The pillars of authenticity, family and most importantly, our loyal fan’s perspective has been instrumental in procuring success. However, like any vehicle that has run around the globe 8 times, the franchise is in need of maintenance. My good friend and the godfather of Universal, Ron Meyer has granted me the time to do just that. We have some very exciting news to share soon... stay tuned. Yours truly, Dom #FamilyAlways

Diesel's not an idiot. He knows that Johnson has been good for the franchise, and if his spinoff is a success it will mean bigger things for everyone.  As for Johnson, he chimed in yesterday and kept his comments pretty chill.

I'd like to think whatever been there was between Johnson and Diesel has been squashed. They're too much fun together to let anything else get in the way, and personally I found The Fate of the Furious to be a little less enjoyable without them sharing the screen.

Tyrese Has Beef With Dwayne Johnson Over 'Fast 9' Delay

Tyrese better know his role and shut his mouth! Yesterday we learned that Fast & Furious 9 was being delayed by a year to April 19th 2020. While we weren't given a reason why, it might have to do with Universal wanting to squeeze their Dwayne Johnson/Jason Statham spinoff into the 2019 slot. And it seems the very idea of that has angered Tyrese Gibson, who has taken a page from the Roman Pearce playbook and started talking trash.

He hit up Instagram flat out blamed Johnson and producer Hiram Garcia for the delay, boasting that he knew all along they'd be the ones to break up the franchise's tight-knit crew. Daaaaaammmmmmn!

He knows half those actors in the second image are long gone, right? Like long gone before Johnson ever showed up?

Anyway, this is on top of the beef Johnson already has with Vin Diesel, which is why you never saw Hobbs or Dom share screen time in Fate of the Furious. It's also probably why Universal moved on a spinoff so quickly, to keep their two heavyweight stars under the same umbrella, but not necessarily in the same movie.

I don't know if Tyrese is just shooting his mouth off or not, and really it doesn't matter. The fact is Johnson took this franchise to the next level, so maybe there's a bit of sour grapes there. These movies are like printing money and there is no end in sight as long as internal squabbles don't fuck it up. That's the course they seem to be traveling on right now, though, and somebody at Universal might want to step in.

Review: 'The Fate Of The Furious' Hits Some Bumps, But Has Plenty Of Gas In The Tank

Is it possible the Fast and the Furious franchise will never run out of gas? Could they speed along into racing nirvana for an eternity? Think about it; if it were to happen it would have been after the unfairly maligned 'Tokyo Drift', but instead these movies have only grown stronger, recalibrating from street racing dramas into four-wheeled superhero movies where cars believably hold up against armored tanks, planes, and now, submarines. The Fate of the Furious is pretty much everything fans of these movies could want; the action is bigger, the script is cornier, the rhetoric about family more overdone than ever, and Dwayne Johnson's muscles are more...muscular. He's also sweatier. And kind of a soccer Dad. But I'd be lying if I said this reached the glorious heights of Fast Five or the chaotic beauty of Furious 7. There are issues that could be a real drag as Dom and his crew head into the final stretch.

Let's be clear; nobody is going to walk away from The Fate of the Furious disappointed. The genius of these movies is that they have allowed the audience to feel as much a part of Dominic Toretto's (Vin Diesel, of course) family as any of the characters he's surrounded by. When Brian and Mia (Paul Walker and Jordana Brewster) rode off into the sunset it was a bittersweet moment we all felt. When fan-favorite Han (Sung Kang) was killed, we were all equally outraged and vengeful. That has also allowed us to connect with goofball characters like Roman Pierce (Tyrese) and Tej (Ludacris), while accepting newcomers such as sexy hacker Ramsey (Nathalie Emmanuel) with open arms. The bond between them is as strong as ever, ironically in the one film where that bond is broken by none other than Dom himself.

The film begins in what probably could have been a perfect post-credits sequence (There isn't one, by the way, so don't stick around.) to show Dom's evolution from street racing grease monkey to man of the world. He and Letty (Michelle Rodriguez) are in Havana on their honeymoon; Dom is feeling the spirit of Cuba, the culture, the people, and of course, the cars. For a few minutes it's like we've been transported back to 2001 with rows of hot rides with hotter girls in short skirts draped over their hoods. Then, all the good vibes are interrupted when Dom's cousin is bullied by a local thug. Dom challenges him to a race with their cars on the line, but it's uneven because he's stuck in an old lemon against the fastest car in Cuba.  Pulling some wild, likely b.s. MacGyver-type stuff  that could literally cause the car to explode, Dom wins, which goes against his motto of it “doesn’t matter what’s under the hood. It matters who is behind the wheel."  Well, sorta. Dom earns the guy's respect but doesn't take his car, and all is right in the world.

That's Dom for ya. Similar to his character in Knockaround Guys, and his character in Riddick, and...well, basically ALL of Vin Diesel's roles, he lives by a certain moral code. Family and honor above all else, which is why it's so interesting when he betrays all of that to work for Cipher (Charlize Theron, more on her in a sec), a super-hacktivist with some plan to shame the world's super powers or something. She has something on Dom, and the reveal of what it is making him turn on his pals, literally running Agent Hobbs (Johnson) off the road and stealing a dangerous EMP, will make sense given his code. Cue up Mr. Nobody (Kurt Russell), the government spook who aide Dom's team last time, convinces the crew to mount up against their former leader. He cooks up an elaborate prison plot that has Hobbs busting out Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham), who has his own personal beef with Cipher that supersedes his hatred for Hobbs.  The prison break is a riot; no, a literal Attica-style riot with Hobbs and Shaw plowing through dozens of jump-suited thugs and armed guards, rubber bullets hilariously bouncing off Hobbs' chest.

The film runs like a well-oiled machine every second we get to spend with Dom's team. We can't get enough of Tej's jabs at the hapless Roman or their competition for Ramsey's attention. We love seeing the "softer" side of Hobbs as we get a look at what family means to him. And we also feel for Letty, who is left confused by Dom's betrayal. All of this stuff feels familiar and it carries over into the action which, under the guidance of The Italian Job's F. Gary Gray, brings more vehicular mayhem than the franchise has ever seen. Thankfully they aren't all Mini Coopers getting smashed up this time, but literally thousands of "zombie" cars due to Cipher's technological wizardry. It's an incredible sequence, yet surpassed by the final battle set at an icy Russian outpost. Explosions, submarines, nuclear warheads, and torpedoes make for (along with the threat of a watery demise) make for one of the most elaborate setpieces these movies have ever seen. And that doesn't even count what's going on up in the air on Cipher's plane, where the action down below is matched only by the comedy above. No way am I spoiling that.

Where the film stalls is pretty much every time Cipher starts talking. The F&F movies haven't always had great villains, but they are all better than Cipher who babbles gobbledygook about "accountability" and whatever, with none of it making any sense. She tries to be mercurial and slick, but she's not interesting enough for us to care. When she starts explaining her master plan (Always a no no) it's so nonsensical she practically waves it off as meaningless, which it is. It's almost like franchise writer Chris Morgan is too embarrassed to have her say it out loud.  Theron's performance is on such a low gear you wish she could swap screen time with the great Helen Mirren who has a terrific extended cameo as a character we could need to be seeing more of.  Cipher isn't the only problem, either. As a die-hard fan of Han, the ease that Deckard Shaw is accepted, even for a moment, rings totally false. To believe it you have to do some serious pretzel-twisting with Dom's moral code. Okay he believes in family, but surely there must be limits?

Oh who am I kidding? The Fast and the Furious have limits? Pfft! This week the screenwriter didn't shoot down the idea we could see one of these movies set in outer space. I believe it. How many times can you save the world? They could totally drift a space station, right? As they rolled out of their headquarters to save the planet from a potential WWIII, it's clear our favorite bunch of free-wheelin' antiheroes have become The A-Team. They travel the world and save the day whenever duty calls. We've seen this franchise undergo one successful evolution already, and despite a few bumps in the road The Fate of the Furious shows there's still a lot of tread left on these tires.

Vin Diesel Betrays His Family In First Trailer For 'The Fate Of The Furious'

Remember when the Fast & Furious movies were just about hot cars and hotter women? Ahhh, how innocent they used to be, but that was a long time ago. As the long-running franchise (15 years!!!) moves into its eighth chapter with the newly-titled The Fate of the Furious, the stunts have only become more insane, and we wouldn't have it any other way.

But beyond just the ridiculous car manuevers pulled off by Vin Diesel and crew, these movies have always been about family. We've seen Dom Torretto's fam shaken to their core of late by a pair of sudden deaths, and of course the real-life passing of star Paul Walker.  However, the new film's title is ominous for a reason because now it's Dom who appears to have betrayed everyone he loves.  The giant wrecking ball seen in the opening chase is nothing compared to the wrecking ball Dom takes to his family.

Charlize Theron makes her franchise debut as the villain who forces Dom's hand, and we see Jason Statham return working on the side of the angels. Everything has gone haywire.  Directed by F. Gary Gray and starring Michelle Rodriguez, Ludacris, Tyrese Gibson, Nathalie Emmanuel, Lucas Black, Kurt Russell, Elsa Pataky, Scott Eastwood, Kristofer Hivju, and Helen Mirren, The Fate of the Furious opens April 14th 2017.

'Fast 8' Title Revealed As 'The Fate Of The Furious' In New Teaser

Has this been a crazy couple of days for trailers or what? It seems like everybody is dropping teases for some of next year's biggest movies, but dammit they don't get any bigger than Fast & Furious, and the first footage has hit the tracks for the eighth film, newly-titled The Fate of the Furious.

That's an ominous title for Vin Diesel and his crew but the stakes have never been higher. Charlize Theron is coming aboard as the chief villain, joined by fellow new additions Scott Eastwood and Helen Mirren (!!!). The full trailer will drop this Sunday, so we only get quick glimpses of Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese, and Theron. Jason Statham will return, and so will Lucas Black who hasn't been seen since 'Tokyo Drift'. Oh, and some hot babes and fast cars since this wouldn't be Fast & Furious without either. Here's the official synopsis:

Now that Dom and Letty are on their honeymoon and Brian and Mia have retired from the game—and the rest of the crew has been exonerated—the globetrotting team has found a semblance of a normal life. But when a mysterious woman (Oscar® winner Charlize Theron) seduces Dom into the world of crime he can’t seem to escape and a betrayal of those closest to him, they will face trials that will test them as never before.

From the shores of Cuba and the streets of New York City to the icy plains off the arctic Barents Sea, our elite force will crisscross the globe to stop an anarchist from unleashing chaos on the world’s stage…and to bring home the man who made them a family.

Directed by F. Gary Gray, The Fate of the Furious opens April 14th 2017.

Tyrese Is Coming Back For 'Transformers: The Last Knight'

It looks like Josh Duhamel won't be the only original cast member to return for Transformers: The Last Knight. With shooting already underway on the franchise's fifth film, Tyrese Gibson has confirmed through Instagram that he'll be back as soldier Robert Epps, once again getting swept up in the fight between Autobots and Decepticons.

Tyrese joins Mark Wahlberg, Isabela Moner, Sir Anthony Hopkins, and Laura Haddock with the plot possibly involving Optimus Prime's journey to Cybertron and quest for a powerful artifact with ties to King Arthur.  With Duhamel and Tyrese returning it appears the U.S. military will be playing a big role after skipping Transformers: Age of Extinction.

Like him or not but Tyrese has been right in the middle of two of the biggest movie franchises of all-time. He'll be seen next opposite Vin Diesel and the gang in Fast 8, which he's been a part of since 2003's 2 Fast 2 Furious.  That film opens next April, with Transformers: The Last Knight arriving just two months later on June 23rd 2017.

Tyrese Gibson says he's met with Warner Bros. about 'Green Lantern Corps'

If there's an African-American superhero out there then Tyrese Gibson has probably lobbied to play him. The Fast & Furious star has put himself out there as someone who desperately wants to play a major superhero character, and lately he's been less-than-subtle about his desire to be Green Lantern. Warner Bros. has dated a film for 2020, recently revealing at Comic-Con that it will actually be a Green Lantern Corps movie. In a conversation with Collider, Tyrese revealed that he's met with Warner Bros. about a role in the film, thanking fan-casting for the interest he's receiving from the studio.

“Well I was innocent from the beginning. I was at home eating a bowl of Lucky Charms in my drawers, my ugly feet were out, and I got about six direct messages on Instagram with photos of me as the Green Lantern. This particular fan who did this fan art said that there was a community of people that had been talking for like a month and a half about who they think would be the best Green Lantern and they all picked me. I said to them, ‘I took the oath, and I am going to commit myself to this process of seeing what’s possible.’”

“I’ve already had a couple of meetings at Warner Bros., so we’ll see what happens. I do believe that there needs to be more black superheroes out there, but that’s not even my motivation. I think I would be the best Green Lantern and based on my fans and supporters that spent around $6 billion in box office receipts, I feel like there’s a fanbase of fans out there waiting to see me put on this green suit and do my thing. So I would love to confirm something today but I can’t. We’ll just keep following up.”

Rumors are that Chris Pine is the frontrunner to play Green Lantern Hal Jordan, the most iconic human member of the Corps. Tyrese would likely play John Stewart, the Green Lantern many are familiar with from the Justice League animated series. Some are claiming the film will be along the lines of a space buddy comedy, which would be perfectly suited to Tyrese's skills, but as of now nothing is confirmed. The film has yet to announce a director or screenwriter, perhaps waiting to see how their DC cinematic universe develops after Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

Review: 'Furious 7' starring Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Dwayne Johnson, and More

The Fast & Furious series occupies a very unique place for movie lovers. One the one hand, it’s without a shadow of a doubt the most successful original franchise Hollywood has seen in decades, and has built a loyal following of fans who will accept any amount of over-the-top hokum it throws at them. On the other side are those who don't understand why people care about these obviously terrible movies. What the latter group fails to get, and the bombastic, gratuitous, and pure awesomeness of Furious 7 won't convince them, is how deeply personal these movies are when boiled down to their very essence.

No greater example of the close-knit ties between this franchise and its fans exists than in Furious 7, which sadly marks the final screen role for the late Paul Walker. His death in the middle of production creates a chasm that simply can't be filled, even with his twin brothers filling in noticeably in various scenes. But it's more than just the physical stuff we miss. The oft-cited theme of "family' is pumped up more than ever in Chris Morgan's screenplay, and every scene with Walker brings a little pang of hurt. While there's a deeply sentimental tone throughout, Furious 7 is also the biggest, loudest, and "holy crap that was incredible!!!" chapter yet. It's like injecting Red Bull straight into your veins and pouring liquid speed into your eyeballs.

Once considered the red-headed stepchild, 2006's 'Tokyo Drift' is now one of the most important installments as things finally came full circle after the death of Han (Sung Kang) at the hands of Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham), the older brother to Owen Shaw who was seemingly killed in Fast & Furious 6. Deckard is an unstoppable force, and after making his presence felt in explosive fashion, he goes toe-to-toe in the ultimate machismo showdown against Agent Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson), leaving Hobbs laid up in the hospital. If that doesn't establish Shaw as the baddest man on the planet nothing else will.

While Shaw seeks revenge against Dom and the rest of his family, Brian (Walker) is entering a new phase of his life as a father and husband, so surviving the war to come is more paramount than ever. Letty (Michelle Rodriguez) is still struggling to cope with her near death and subsequent amnesia, with Dom basically doing a four-wheeled version of The Vow to jog her memory. The action once again takes them around the world, with help from a covert agent played by Kurt Russell, plus a stop in Tokyo to revisit Lucas Black's 'Tokyo Drift' character. That scene doesn't work out as well as it should since the flashbacks don't jibe with the present, but it's still a cool bit of nostalgia and world-building. They also pick up a new recruit in Ramsey (played by the incredibly hot Nathalie Emmanuel), a computer hacker with a super MacGuffin device capable of spying on anyone. And of course Roman (Tyrese Gibson) and Tej (Ludacris) trade quips in the middle of pulling death-defying feats Superman wouldn't dare.

And let's talk about those feats because Furious 7 is basically one mind-blowing set piece after another, designed to evoke the loudest possible response from its fans. In terms of plot this may be the weakest yet but incoming director James Wan doesn't give a crap about all of that. He's dropping cars from airplanes and flying cars between buildings! In one incredibly well-choreographed set piece Wan hits us with literally everything he can think of: car chases, armed buses, cliff diving, gun fights, a brawl between Walker and martial arts superstar Tony Jaa, sniper rifles, Djimon Hounsou in slick shades...damned if it doesn't have everything a genre fan could want. The only thing missing is a cat fight and that comes later when Rodriguez throws down with UFC champ Ronda Rousey. What's most impressive is that this is really Wan's first time tackling this kind of genre, having built his career on horrors. You’d never know it, though, and clearly he's been taking some tips from The Raid in the use of wild, kinetic camera angles. The hand-to-hand combat is faster, the vehicular mayhem more insane than ever. Even if this turns out to be Wan's only film before moving on he has made quite the impression. Making less of an impact are Rousey and Jaa, whose talents aren't given nearly enough time to shine. On the other hand, Johnson is bolder and more oiled up than ever as Hobbs. In a film full of superheroes he's the most superhero-y of them all, not even broken bones can stop him!

For those who wonder why these movies are so successful? It's really quite simple. As over-the-top and stupidly unbelievable as many of the action scenes are, they are balanced nicely an emotional sincerity that is easy to understand. None of these characters are especially deep, we all get that, but we recognize that they would all die to protect one another. That's an incredibly powerful thing that the franchise has tapped into, and Furious 7 keeps that tradition alive even when turning the page.

Take One Last Ride in the New 'Furious 7' Trailer

With two more Fast & Furious movies on the way, "one last ride" doesn't hold a lot of weight, but it's still cool to hear Vin Diesel's Dom Torretto say it.  Furious 7 (or "Life" as our own Julian Lytle calls it) is racing into theaters in just a few weeks and maybe now is a good time for a refresher on how everything ties together. Good thing a new international trailer is here to help do just that.

Furious 7 finally connects the last few films with the third film in the franchise, Tokyo Drift, which few liked (except for me!!) at the time but is proving to be a key chapter. That was when we first saw Han (Sung Kang) die, but in Fast 6 we learned it wasn't the accident it appeared to be. Instead he was murdered by Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham), the badass older brother to dead villain, Owen Shaw, who was played by Luke Evans. Shaw's out for revenge, and with Dom and his crew back home in Los Angeles, he takes the opportunity for an explosive introduction. This film also sees the return of Tokyo Drift's Lucas Black, but sadly no Bow Wow and his green Hulk car.

This latest trailer features an introduction by Diesel and Michelle Rodriguez before jumping right into the action which is as insane as ever. We wouldn't accept half of this stuff in any other film but somehow when these guys (and lovely gals) survive crashing cars from thousand-foot drops or jump between skyscrapers we're willing to accept it.

Directed by James Wan, Furious 7 opens April 3rd.

New 'Furious 7' Poster and Extended Look Revs Up for Action

What's there left to really learn about Furious 7? What was there new to learn six months, actually? Just take one look at the latest poster which features cars tumbling through the air, and when they land, wherever they land, the drivers are going to be perfectly okay. Why? Because this is the Fast & Furious franchise and we've come to accept it when ridonkulous stuff happens that defy belief. These are the closest thing to superhero movies that don't involve any actual superheroes.

Along with this new image comes an extended first look at the film which teases the scene from the poster. Why are they driving out of the back of a plane? Who knows? We know Dom and his close-knit group will be trying to survive the vengeful attack of Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham) who is looking for payback after the death of his brother in the last film.

Naturally you can expect to see Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Tyrese Gibson, Dwayne Johnson, Jordana Brewster, Ludacris, Elsa Pataky, and Michelle Rodriguez back behind the wheel, but also an unexpected returning face in Tokyo Drift's Lucas Black. They'll be joined by Kurt Russell (!), Tony Jaa (!!), Ronda Rousey (!!!), Djimon Hounsou, and Game of Thrones' Nathalie Emmanuel.

Check out the Official Trailer for 'Furious 7'

If you had told me back in 2001 that 13 years later we'd still be getting new F&F sequels I would have either flat out called you a liar or wept for the downfall of American cinema. Here we are, 2014, just months away from the latest installment of the franchise, not only is the series thriving but the last few movies have set a new standard of popcorn cinema sequels, showing that it's totally possible to reinvent your franchise while staying true to the core of your films. If not for the tragic passing of Paul Walker I would assume they could have kept the franchise going for at least two films after 7, hell...they still might!

The below trailer doesn't really show us too much about the central plot of the film, but it does show that the stunts, chemistry and fun are still there, what more do you need? Jason Statham is our big bad this time around, brother to the villain who was dispatched in 6. We caught sight of Statham's character in a post-credits sequence where it was revealed that he was behind the death of Han in Tokyo Drift, a scene that is revisited in this trailer. Then to the mobile jailbreak of Megan (Nathalie Emmanuel from Game of Thrones), which contains more than the usual amount of crazy cool that we've come to expect from the series. Added bonus of some shots featuring Kurt Russel!

Check out the trailer below and look for Furious 7 when it hits theaters April 3rd, 2014.

Cast of 'Fast & Furious 7' Remember Paul Walker; Film Delayed Not Cancelled

News of Paul Walker's death yesterday in a car accident continues to have the Hollywood community in a state of shock, and legions of the actor's fans and peers have come out on social media to comment on his passing. That includes the people he'll be most closely associated, his co-stars in the Fast & Furious franchise, a close-knit group many would say is closer to a family that just another cast. Vin Diesel, who starred with Walker in four F&F movies beginning in 2001, posted the above image to Instagram along with these words...

"Brother I will miss you very much. I am absolutely speechless. Heaven has gained a new Angel. Rest in Peace."

Early this morning Diesel would then take to Twitter to further express his condolences....

Other members of the Fast & Furious family expressed similar feelings about Walker....

Meanwhile, production on Fast & Furious 7 has understandably been delayed to allow the cast time to grieve. Filming was set to begin anew next week in Atlanta, but that will be held off until Universal execs and director James Wan come up with a plan for handling the situation. A good deal of the film had already been shot, and the cast was due to move to Abu Dhabi soon for additional shooting, but rewrites may be in order to explain the fate of Walker's character, Brian O'Conner, one of the two main leads opposite Vin Diesel's Dominic Toretto. The film was already in a time squeeze to have it ready by next summer, and a lengthy delay could force them to change the release date.
It's also unclear whether plans will continue to keep Fast & Furious alive through a ninth film, or if this will force Universal to reevaluate.

Review: 'Black Nativity,' starring Forest Whitaker, Angela Bassett, and Jennifer Hudson

With the holiday season now in full effect, we're getting a barrage of holiday film after holiday film. One of the latest is from director and writer Kasi Lemmons, who brings us an updated adaptation of Langston Hughes’ play "Black Nativity," starring Jacob Latimore, Forest Whitaker, Angela Bassett and Jennifer Hudson.  A movie with a lack of subtlety and well-crafted-but-jarring musical numbers is here and offering a different take on Hughes' 1961 tale.

The story begins with Langston (Latimore), a 15-year-old who with his single mother Naima (Hudson) lives in a fairly poor area of Baltimore. When he and his mother are evicted from their home, she decides to send him to his grandparents' house in Harlem for the Christmas holiday until she can figure things out. Once there, he meets his grandparents for the first time, since his mother is estranged from them because of some disagreement in the past. It’s hard for Langston to get adjusted to being in New York and living with his grandfather, a famous preacher (Whitaker) in the city and his loving grandmother (Bassett), who tries to no avail to give him everything he would need to adjust and have a good holiday. Everything is leading to the performance of "Black Nativity" planned at his grandfather's church where Langston’s grandfather has a performance of the Black Nativity play for everyone in the community.

It’s really hard to figure out the character of Langston in this story. Throughout it he’s so focused on his mother and her troubles that he takes no real time to get to know his grandparents at all. It’s all complaining and whining. Latimore does have a good singing voice though, something I can’t really say the same for Whitaker and Bassett but I like that it is them instead of having them not sing at all. Jennifer Hudson is as always amazing in each singing performance in the film and really shines, which she has to since she really isn’t given much to do acting-wise.

The movie really isn’t that long and goes by pretty quickly. That becomes a problem since every time you start to get interested in the plot of the story out of nowhere there is a song. While you’re thinking  of course a musical has songs it’s in how it’s handled and how the moments of story and character development flow in and out of those songs. This movie did not do that well. Still Raphael Saadiq should be commended on production of the music throughout the picture. The soundtrack felt current and not annoying to sit though.

To wrap up, Black Nativity isn’t the best holiday film we have this season and probably won’t clean up at the cinema because in the end it’s just a quite average movie.  The best things about it are the songs and you can get the soundtrack and listen to those without seeing the movie. Black Nativity has all the best intentions in the world but really didn’t follow through on any of them.
