The Orphanage remake Lands a Director

Guillermo Del Toro freaked me out back in 2007 with The Orphanage, a spooky Spanish-language film about a woman who returns to the orphanage where she was raised. There she discovers that her daughter's creepy imaginary friend is also the same one that tormented her as a child. You'll never look at a kid wearing a bag on his head the same again. Ok, yes you will, hopefully with suspicion. The Orphanage only went on to gross about $7M in America, but over $70M worldwide.

Anyway, plans have been in the works for an American remake practically before the original ever hit theatres. Del Toro, who produced the original and is producing this one as well, has tapped American film director Larry Fessenden to helm the project. Fessenden and Del Toro co-wrote the script together and have been acquaintances for quite some time. This is a bit of shock considering most expected Del Toro to select another Spanish director for the gig, but he was impressed Fessenden's body of work, which includes low-budge horrors like The Last Winter and Wendigo.
