I was looking at images on Google when I saw one of a girl jumping in the air with a huge smile on her face. At first, I thought it was Saya from “Blood Plus,” but it wasn’t. It was from an anime movie that I had not seen called “The Girl Who Leapt Through Time.” The movie was made by Mamoru Hosoda, who made a bunch of Digimon movies. I was kind of reluctant to watch it for this reason, but I decided to give it a chance. I am very happy that I did.
The movie is about a school girl Makoto who inadvertently learns how to travel through time. The story is set 20 years after the events in the book called “The Girl Who Dashes Through Time.” In “The Girl Who Leapt Through Time,” Makoto starts off by going back through time for selfish reasons. However, she realizes the damage that it’s causing others. She then tries to fix those issues, as well.
We loved this movie. It really made you feel for the characters because they were fleshed out. I never felt like I could care less the pain and sadness that the characters were going through. If they were happy, I was smiling as well. It’s awful when there is a great plot with undeveloped characters.
I sometimes wonder if I would want to travel back through time. This movie, as well as others I’ve seen, make me realize that even as tempting as it could be, it might not be a good idea. The Butterfly Effect is something that the anime really focuses on, and it shows that her continuously trying to change the past was causing more complications each time. Overall, the kids and I were mesmerized and didn’t’ want it to end. I know that I am going to add this movie to my collection.
