JIgsaw vs. Leatherface?
I've never really been a big fan of Platinum Dunes or their stable of horror remakes. Not really my thing, and struck me as being gruesome for no particularly good reason. The Saw movies? Eh, I can take 'em or leave 'em. There've been some genuinely decent ones, like the first two, then it sortof decided that it was more important to just keep the franchise alive than do anything new. So why the ramble about horror movies I could care less about?
Variety is reporting that Twisted Pictures, makers of the Saw films, is about to ink a deal to acquire The Texas Chainsaw Massacre license from Platinum Dunes. The plan is for Twisted to update the franchise to a more modern setting, including adding a 3-D element similar to last year's My Bloody Valentine. The new film will be written by Stephen Susco, who mangled up a pretty good J-Horror film and turned it into The Grudge a few years ago.
The new deal will apparently be for multiple films. The Chainsaw series has been something of a cash cow through the first two installments, grossing over $160M domestic, although the sequel only did about half the business of the first. The production costs for both movies were amazingly low, however.
The only reason I care about this is because I can promise you, at some point down the line, we will see Leatherface vs. Jigsaw. It might seem far fetched, but you don't have two staple genre flicks of this type under your belt without a little crossover. Can't you see Leatherface trying to make his way through the razor wire? I can.
