Tim Burton's adaptation of the Lewis Carrol classic is a visual feast, but do yourself a favor and check it out in plain old, steam driven 2-D. Burton adds his own twist to the story, presenting an Alice that is 13 years older and returning to the mystical world of Wonderland just in time to square off with the vicious Red Queen.
2.The Ghost Writer
Murder, corrupt politicians, torture scandals, adultery...it's all par for the course in Roman Polanski's atmospheric thriller about a ghost writer(Ewan Mcgregor) who signs on to punch up the memoir of a former British prime minister(Pierce Brosnan).
1.
North Face
Makes Vertical Limit look like a bunch of dudes running hills in football practice. North Face tells the tale of the tragic 1936 attempt to scale the Eiger north face, referred to as "the last problems of the Alps". Gorgeously shot, almost in a claustrophobic style that makes you feel as if you're right there with them dangling from a few feet of rope. A truly breath taking film that is a must see if it's in your neck of the woods.
DVD Pick of the Week:Cold Souls Since everybody's going to pick Where the Wild Things Are anyway, I thought I'd do something different by spotlighting this quirky little soul searching comedy. Paul Giamatti stars as himself, who believes that his soul is interfering in his attempt to portray Uncle Vanya in the Checkhov play. Fortunately for him, there's a new procedure that can remove one's soul for a nominal fee. Afterwards, things don't go quite as he expected. Turns out being soulless can have a pretty dramatic impact on one's marriage and social life, and things only get worse when his soul is accidentally shipped off to who knows where. Fans of Charlie Kauffman's Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind will appreciate the film's style and subtle humor, and Giamatti is amazing as always.
