Tim Burton's remake of the Lewis Caroll classic chopped off the heads of the competition, breaking the record for the biggest March debut ever. It's also the biggest debut ever for Burton, kicking Planet of the Apes to the curb(thankfully), and also broke Avatar's record for strongest 3-D debut ever. The film benefits from a recognizable, classic story combined with one of Hollywood's most bankable stars in Johnny Depp, playing the type of zany character he's best at.
2. Brooklyn's Finest
A pretty ho-hum beginning for a ho-hum film. Antoine Fuqua's dirty cop drama pulled in numbers reminiscent of other cop dramas in recent years. Expect this one to quietly fade away in the face of some stiff competition this week.
3. Shutter Island
Dropping a mere 40%, Shutter Island has gained more dough than any previous Scorsese/Dicaprio film at this stage of release. Not too shabby.
4. Cop Out
I guess Kevin Smith can stand up and cheer now! Cop Out is officially the highest grossing film(domestically) of the director's career, surpassing Zack & Miri's
5. Avatar
Following Avatar's ass kicking at the hands of The Hurt Locker
6. The Crazies- $7.02M/$27.4M
7. Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief
Just don't wanna write out that damn title anymore. Good movie. Unbearable to type out.
8. Valentine's Day
9. Crazy Heart
The biggest beneficiary of Jeff Bridges' Best Actor nomination(other than The Dude himself, obviously), Crazy Heart jumped up 36% from last week.
10. Dear John
The letter's in the mail. Start packin' your stuff.
