Magneto Film Likely Dead; Deadpool and Wolverine news

It's been nearly six years of news on a potential X-men spinoff flick centered around Magneto, and the time he spent growing up and surviving in Auschwitz during World World II. The film, given the title X-Men Origins: Magneto, once had David Goyer(Batman Begins) attached to direct, and even at one point had a planned filming date in August 2009.  Then it just sorta disappeared. Where it faded away, news on X-men: First Class took over. For good reason, according to producer Lauren Schuler Donner, who says that the Magneto project may never happen, and that some of the concepts are being incorporated into First Class. From her interview with Crave Online...

Q: Is there still any heat on Magneto?

Lauren Shuler Donner: No. You know, there’s internal discussions but probably not. It kind of got incorporated into this one, a lot of it.

Q: Things from the Goyer script are in First Class?

Lauren Shuler Donner: Magneto history. Stuff from the Marvel/Magneto history.

So much for that. I never really wanted to see that project happen anyway. I love Magneto as a character. He's one of the most layered villains in comic book history, and his origin is fantastic, but it never seemed like something that could carry an entire film. It's better served as a springboard to future stories.

Donner also revealed a couple of brief nuggets about the Wolverine sequel and Deadpool. Donner confirmed what we already knew, that the story would be centered around The Wolverine Saga, featuring clawed Canuck's trip to Japan and his subsequent love affair with Mariko. She says the film will stick to this comic very closely.

A few weeks ago we noted how Ryan Reynold's disgustingly busy schedule had put the Deadpool film in some jeopardy. Donner must've heard those cries of anguish from fans(and some comic creators), because she addressed Reynold's involvement directly...

Lauren Shuler Donner: You know, Ryan is so committed to being Deadpool. He is Wade Wilson. Well, no, he’s Deadpool. He is so committed to it that he worked with the writers on the script. Even though he’s doing Green Lantern, he’s stayed involved in that project. I’m hoping we’ll get it off the ground next year.

She's hoping, but I wouldn't bet on it. I don't really care as long as it happens. Deadpool deserves some big screen justice after the way he was so badly mischaracterized in X-men Origins: Wolverine.
