Road to Perdition sequel update

Most people forget that 2002's Road to Perdition was based on a graphic novel. At the time(and even now really), most people just focused on superhero films. Based on Max Allan Collins' story of a mob enforcer(played by Tom Hanks) who goes on the run with his son after witnessing a rival's brutal murder, was one of my favorite films of that year. I've only seen it once or twice since then, but it holds up, and that ending is a shock to the system even now. I can remember the gasps from the crowd when it happened to this day. The film was also a box office success, grossing over $180M worldwide.

Afterwards, there was some talk of a possible sequel. Collins wrote two more novelized sequels, Road to Purgatory and then Road to Paradise. He'd been hoping to both write and direct a film based on Purgatory, with the most recent news from back in 2008 indicating he would do just that.

With the release of Road to Perdition on Blu-Ray yesterday, Collins has had opportunity to update fans on the sequel's progress. In an interview with Movieweb, he indicated that the project is still in the works and that things have gotten "very serious".  The biggest news to come out of it is that he will no longer be directing the film, which will take place 10 years after Perdition's conclusion and will follow a vengeance seeking Michael O'Sullivan, Jr.

No word as of yet as to who will be directing. Collins will still be handling the script. Sam Mendes(Revolutionary Road) was the guy behind the camera for Road to Perdition.

Expect more news on this in the coming weeks.
