Not long ago a list was released, supposedly containing the names of all the directors Christopher Nolan was considering to direct Superman. That list hasn't been debunked, per se, but it turns out it's more of a "wish list" than anything else. Tony Scott, Duncan Jones, Zack Snyder, and others were all featured in that report. Well now you can add Darren Aronofsky(The Wrestler
) to that list, according to the LA Times.
They don't give any additional info other than that, so take this with the usual dash of salt. Aronofsky is reportedly up for a shot at directing the Wolverine sequel as well, so that's two superhero flicks out of the clear blue sky. I know his Black Swan has won him all sorts of raves, but you'd think it would lead to more ambitious projects of his own making, not mainstream fodder that doesn't really seem to suit him.
However, that's not to say he won't end up doing one of these two flicks. I've always said that the only way I'd be interested in a Superman movie is if it goes darker, more contemplative. We're talking about the most powerful being in the universe, forced to live in a world protecting people who can't possibly understand him with nobody to relate to. I wanna know what makes him tick. Aronofsky could pull that off with ease.
Yet it's more likely he'd choose Wolverine just as a chance to work with Hugh Jackman again. We shall see.
Then there's Ben Affleck. He's been the talk of the town(har har) since his flick, The Town, released last week to critical and box praise. Reportedly he met with Warner Brothers to discuss possibly directing Superman, but has pulled his own name out of the hat. That would've been interesting. In the 2006 film Hollywoodland
