Hoskins confirms motion capture Roger Rabbit sequel

We've been waiting 20 years for a sequel to Who Framed Roger Rabbit? Robert Zemeckis has  been throwing hints around more than ten years that he wanted to revisit the cartoonish rabbit, his buxom girlfriend, and the rest of the toons in Toontown. In '98 they actually had some CGI footage of a planned sequel, but that fell through, probably due to the relative youth of the technology. Since that time, Zemeckis has become the flagbearer for motion capture, used in films like The Polar Express, Beowulf, and last year's A Christmas Carol.

In July of last year Zemeckis confirmed that talks with star Bob Hoskins were taking place. Then four months later a pair of stories, one confirming that the writers of the original film were back and scripting the sequel. A few days later Zemeckis commented on the use of motion capture for the film, stating that he would likely use it for the human characters but wanted Roger Rabbit and his animated friends to remain in traditional 2-D. We haven't heard much of anything since.

At the red carpet premier of Made in Dagenham, Bob Hoskins was asked by Hey You Guys Live about the Roger Rabbit sequel, and all but confirmed his willingness to participate....

HUGlive : So how’s Roger Rabbit 2 progressing?!?
Hoskins: ‘Zemekis said he’s going to do it like a Christmas Carol, but I’m 67 years old! I’ll look like a cartoon at that point! If they do it, I’m in!
Two things come out of that statement. 1. That Zemeckis is still very much in the planning stages of the sequel. I wouldn't expect to see it in theaters for at least a couple of years.  2. Hoskins is old as sh*t.  Nah, but he's right that he'd be too old to play Eddie Valiant. Motion capture is the only way to preserve his age on screen, so it looks like Zemeckis's earlier idea is going to go as he planned.
