Paul W.S. Anderson just won't let his franchise baby die. I'm sure it has nothing to do that it stars his darling wife, Milla Jojovich. Nothing at all. At this point I have no idea what these films have to do with the Capcom video game franchise they're based on. Right now it just looks like a hyper version of a George Romero flick. This is the first to be shot in 3-D, and considering it looks like it could be the best of the series so far, I have a feeling Resident Evil will be around for a long time to come. Just as long as Ali Larter keeps sticking around you can count me in.
Look at Joaquin Phoenix in the poster for Casey Affleck's new documentary. He looks like some sort of deranged Muppet. When the actor suddenly up and quit his acting career, the questions began immediately whether or not it was just a ploy. The same questions are circling around this film and Phoenix's haywire attempt at beginning a rap star. Whether or not it's real or one big joke I'll leave for you to decide. I've pretty much made up my own mind, which you can read about here.
Vince McMahon might be turning off his core fanbase with this sweet, heartfelt family drama about a boy trying to reunite his family through the sport of amateur wrestling. WWE poster boy, John Cena, gets his first crack at acting alongside some real talent like the great Patricia Clarkson, and holds his own pretty well. It might be the beginning of a broader career for him, and a turning point for the studio as a whole. You can read my review of the film here.
When did we reach the point that a Rob Reiner film has to struggle to get a national release? I guess there isn't enough cynicsm or snark to attract that kind of attention. Based on the novel by Wendelin Van Draanen, Flipped is the story of Bryce and Juli, two best friends since elementary school. Juli believes it's love at first sight, but Bryce has some other ideas. The film follows the path of their relationship and all the twists, turns, and curveballs life throws their way. It'll likely only be playing in DC area for a short while so make sure you run and check it out.
A road trip film based loosely on the popular Australian musical of the same name. One of my favorite actors, Geoffrey Rush, stars as a vindictive priest in hot pursuit of one his school's runaway students.Looks like it could be fun, but the reviews have been lukewarm to say the least.
