PT Anderson's The Master delayed, possibly canceled?

There are very few directors that I would say their films are "events". Paul Thomas Anderson is one of them. The guy has made my favorite film of all time(Boogie Nights), and everything else is ranked pretty darn high, too. Heck, we get the title of our little website from his film, Punch Drunk Love.  When I heard that he was planning a religiously themed epic, sortof mimicking the rise of scientology, and starring Jeremy Renner and Philip Seymour Hoffman, I nearly crapped my pants at the prospect. Not kidding.

Info on the film has been scarce ever since. We heard at one point he was looking at Reese Witherspoon, Emma Stone, and others for the major female role, but nothing ever really came of that. Now I think we're starting to find out why, as The Playlist has learned from Jeremy Renner that the film has been delayed indefinitely. The quotes come from Total Film magazine, and indicate that Anderson hit some sort of creative wall. Or a financial one. Not really sure.

Renner: I was really bummed about that…It really kind of stalled because when we were rehearsing — Phil, Paul and myself — we kept coming up against a wall that we couldn’t overcome. Or at least Paul couldn’t overcome.

I wouldn't put anything past Anderson to overcome. He's a notoriously thoughtful, wordy writer who has so many ideas for every project that sometimes it can get crowded. I'm hoping his problem here is strictly creative.

If it's a financial thing, that could be a bigger issue. His films haven't exactly been box office juggernauts, and a project like this sounds like it could get expensive.  Then again, with Jeremy Renner's increased profile you'd think it'd be easier to secure a few bucks.
