1. The Town- $23.8M
Ben Affleck proved that he can not only be a critical success behind the camera, but at last a box office one as well as his sophomore effort opened with a higher gross than the entire run of his debut, Gone Baby Gone($20.3M).
2. Easy A- $18.2M
Good job, America. Emma Stone's breakout role(in my opinion, anyway) crushed it's meager $8M production budget and debuted with one of the highest opening ever for a teen comedy. While it doesn't compare to Emma Stone's Zombieland(opened at $24M), it's by far a more substantial total than any of the the other teen comdies we've seen this year.
3. Devil- $12.6M
Clearly, M. Night Shyamalan's name doesn't hold a lot of weight anymore as audiences pretty much avoided the first leg of his The Night Chronicles trilogy. Still, at a production budget of only $10M this has to be seen as something of a success. Especially considering the lack of star power and unknown director.
4. Resident Evil: Afterlife- $10.1M/$44M
Last week's champ tumbled over 60%, but it still the highest grossing of the series through this point yet. Of course it also has the benefit of 3-D pricing, of which accounts for 75% of the total gross.
5. Alpha and Omega- $9.2M
A movie I know jack about, it opened with a paltry total even with the benefit of over 1600 3-D screens.
6. Takers- $3M/$52.3M
7. The American- $2.76M/$32.9M
8. Inception- $2.02M/$285M
9. The Other Guys- $2M/$115M
10. Eat Pray Love- $1.7M/$77.7M
