20th Century Fox has confirmed via tweet that James Cameron has agreed to make Avatar 2 and 3 the next films he directs. He plans to begin hammering out a script for the sequels in early 2011, with shooting possibly to begin at the end of the year. Avatar 2 is set to be released in December 2014, with chapter three a year later.
Cameron's been a busy dude lately, or at least his name has been bandied about for a number of other projects. He's producing a remake of Fantastic Voyage sometime in the near future, but was also being pursued by Sony to direct a massively budgeted 3D take on Cleopatra, which was set to star Angelina Jolie. This obviously throws that idea out the window.
