I'll be honest, I've never quite gotten the appeal of Seth McFarlane. I don't watch
Family Guy
and when I have it hasn't exactly bowled me over. Not even when they parodied Star Wars did I find it all that funny.
Spaceballs
was better, and I didn't much care for that either. With that said I am loving the sound of his directorial debut about a guy with a fould mouthed, hard partying teddy bear sidekick. The film, currently titled 'Ted' although it was once known as 'Teddy Bear', would follow “an average Boston guy, normal except for the childhood wish he made that his teddy bear could come to life — and it did. Years later, the boy is an adult, and the bear is still his best friend. But the bear, a carousing, irresponsible slacker, is getting in the way of his buddy committing to adulthood and the girl he loves.”
Alec Sulkin and Wellesley Wild, two other Family Guy writers assisted with the script, currently budgeted at a whopping $65M. The only question was who would get to be the straight man to the Teddy Bear's verbal barrages? According to Deadline that guy is Mark Wahlberg. Wahlberg is currently in negotiations for the lead role, but nothing is set in stone as of yet. McFarlane himself will be voicing Ted, who will be created entirely in CG.
There was a video game that came out not too long ago about a crap talkin', gun toting teddy bear. The name escapes me(was it Naughty Bear?) but I remember playing the demo and thinking it would make for a hilarious movie. While this isn't exactly that, this could turn out to be one worth keeping an eye on.
