The New Wave: 10/15/22

To quote my good friend Brandon Fibbs: "You won't see anything sexier this year than Dame Helen Mirren wielding an automatic weapon".  He's right. The only thing that might come close is if the uber-hot Mary Louise Parker were to let loose some hot lead herself. Bruce Willis kicks back into action hero mode along with an all-star cast(Morgan Freeman, John Malkovich, Brian Cox join in the fun) in this lighthearted adaptation of the popular Warren Ellis graphic novel. Here's hoping we're seeing the kickoff to a possible franchise for the older set. My review of Red can be found here.

They're older. A little brittle looking. But no less filthy and insane. This third(and likely final) installment of the wacky gross out series celebrates 10 years of buffoonery, now complete in Fart-O-Vision 3D. If you can stomach Steve-O's  "sweat cocktail" stunt near the end of the film then you're a braver soul than me. My review of Jackass 3D can be found here.

Edward Norton and director John Curran last teamed up for the delightfully classic The Painted Veil back in 2006. Now the two reunite for a thriller that has Norton in cornrows so ridiculous he looks like the token white guy on NBA Jam. Reviews on this one are mixed, but the chance to see Norton and De Niro do battle again(they last partnered up for The Score) is hard to pass up.
Those who grew to love Aaron Johnson earlier this year in Kick-Ass probably won't be flocking to see him in this biopic of John Lennon's early life pre-Beatles. They probably won't be too happy that the newly minted teen idol is engaged to the film's 43 year old director, Sam Taylor-Wood. Johnson is slowly expanding his range, as he did earlier this year in the somber The Greatest. Here's hoping Nowhere Boy continues that trend.

South Africa's official selection for Best Foreign Language Film at the 82nd Academy Awards, White Wedding is a road trip comedy about a nervous groom travelling to pick up his Best Man for his impending nuptials. The only thing that has me interested is the presence of Jodie Whittaker, who made a splash in the film Venus, opposite Peter O'Toole. She's turned out to be kinda hot. I thought she just fell off the face of the earth, so to speak.
