The Academy goes young style, names James Franco and Anne Hathaway to host the Oscars

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has decided to skew a bit younger this year, naming James Franco and Anne Hathaway as co-hosts of this year's Academy Awards. The event is scheduled for February 27th, 2011.

Personally I have no problem with this. I enjoyed Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin last year, and have liked others such as Billy Crystal in the past. But those guys are old hat to most folks, so I see the desire to try to attract a more youthful audience. I don't think it'll work, since a sacrifice is being made to name recognition, but we shall see.

Here's a possible bone of contention, though. Both Franco and Hathaway are likely to be major factors in a couple of important categories. Franco is pretty much a lock to be nominated for 127 Hours, and Hathaway will probably be the lone nomination for Ed Zwick's Love and Other Drugs. It wouldn't be the first time a presenter won an award while on stage, but could it be the first time a host won? Maybe somebody else can answer that question for me.
